Can’t turn off closed captions on my Brit box on Apple TV

Change subtitles or languages for videos in the Apple TV app or iTunes Store - Apple Support. Did you try as described in the support document? You should be able to set Subtitles to Off, would would also work for CC tracks.
The default is often a device setting, or maybe an app setting, so turn that off in Settings (for the device or app). For the Apple TV box: Settings﹥Accessibility﹥Subtitles and Captioning﹥Closed Captions and SDH﹥On|Off.
