iCloud storage keeps kicking out family members

Almost every month, iCloud 2TB being shared with family kicks out my family members, leaving them with “storage is full notices please buy a storage solution”. It is extremely frustrating to see and fix. And has happened numerous times. Requiring us to reset the family relationship and to add family back to the shared storage. This really needs to stop happening because we are not always in the same place. Please fix this issue of kicking family members off of iCloud.

Here is the solution for your problem.

Ar least it solved the same problem in my case.

Remove manually your family members who have the issues with the storage from the family iCloud.

I suppose you have another Apple device like an iPad. Have a look at the same settings on your other device.

You should find the family member which you already removed from your iPhone again on the other device.

If yes, remove the family member and invite the person back to the family iCloud.

Sounds strange but you have to remove the same members from each device separately.

.. and this is it, the solution.

I hope I could help you.

Let me know if you were successful.

regards

Adam

Hey there Andrew98350,

That is strange behavior to occur, and definitely not expected. We'd like to help by learning more about what's happening, along with ruling out some possible causes:

  1. When did this start to occur with your Family Sharing group?
  2. Are you the family organizer of your Family Sharing group, and if yes, does anything show on your device regarding this issue with iCloud storage?
  3. We see you have an iPhone with iOS 16 installed, but the latest version is iOS 16.4.1(a). You can verify this within Settings > General > About. In case you needed it, this link shows how to first back up, then Update your iPhone or iPad.

Cheers!

The 340 days embargo is madness. It looks like the system has suspicions or something!

I tried using our Macs instead of our iPhones, air dropping the invite. I might try accepting with a VPN set on some other countries, who knows it might be country specific...

I noticed another thing:

My sister is the 2nd person who entered the family. The 3rd and 4th person are getting kicked out. I am far from reaching the storage limit (about 80gb off).

When I enter a 3rd person, it will show iCloud+ for a while (possibly 24 hours), I can see us 3 in the Family storage break down. Then the 3rd person will be shown the 200Gb I pay for but without the iCloud+ features and that person will disappear from the Family storage breakdown. It is now only a matter of time before she gets the iCloud storage full message.

It seems the 3rd person's "instance" in the database is supposed to be synched but somehow it becomes orphaned and gets out of synch eventually.

I can't believe this issue is not widespread enough to draw enough attention at Apple.

I got used to iCloud so much over the years, it would annoy me to try and find another solution.

They have no idea how to fix it, been down that road a number of times. I don’t even think they want it fixed or the helpful button would be enabled. I think they want and need extra $9.99 a month. Ok, so at the risk or Apple reading this and breaking it or to jinxing it, I think it’s fixed. I decided to change my son’s Apple ID, then logged him in on that new Apple ID and added the new Apple ID to the family. Two days later (note below why) I logged the new one out and logged him in on his original Apple ID. I didn’t get the “can’t join for 320 days” or anything like previous attempts to fix. It’s been a week and everything seems to be working. Before I would get the first step within 24 hours where it would show on my son’s phone that he didn’t have access to iCloud+ storage and offering the upgrade option.

Note, do not try to add debit card to a new Apple ID. It triggered some fraud items with our bank and was a lot of time on the phone with the bank, then Apple, and then back to the bank. Navy Federal had to elevate it to the digital department to fix it.

It is happening to one of my family members (wife) too. She keeps losing her access to 2 Terabytes of storage. On my end as the organizer of the family, it shows she has the option of using my storage, but when I look at her phone it shows she is just being asked to purchase more iCloud storage. No option to get back in the family iCloud. However, she still is sharing other apple subscriptions. We fixed this once last month by taking her out of the family and then inviting her to come back in, but now a month later we're back in the same boat.

I have started noticing this as well for family members as well as my own phone. I have 4TB available and am sharing it with my wife and 3 of my kids. I have two apple ID's because years ago I had one email that I purchased all apps on (it is a personal email account), but my main account on phones and Macs is my @icloud.com account. I was able to get the 4 TB on my personal email account and then invited my @icloud account to join and then added everyone on family share. That had been working just fine.

In the last few weeks several of them have come to me and showed me that they are out of storage - not on the family share any more. It has even happened on my iPhone as well as my Mac.

I rejoin and it works, but I am not confident that it won't happen again because it has happened to several of them multiple times.

Completely agree. I'm not tech illiterate either/ It's a problem Apple simply has not tackled. I work for a certain tech giant and I am reliably informed it just hasn't been a priority. This needs to be seen as Apple's connective tissue when it comes to making life simpler - not stressful... after all - there is a price point on this failed delivery and folk will eventually vote with their feet.

I've been having the same issue for months, and have looked for help in person in Apple store. I was simply told to leave and rejoin the family, which worked for roughly a month before reverting me to 5GB of storage. From my family leader's perspective, I have access to the 2TB of shared storage, but from my perspective, it asks me to purchase more storage. I cannot back up my iPhone and have not been able to for months, and I'm worried I'll lose precious photos and videos if I cannot back them up. We purchased this plan so we wouldn't have to worry about losing data, tragic that the opposite is the outcome. I am very disappointed to see others have been having issues longer than me and that this bug has not been addressed.
