HOW DO I REFRESH MY EMAIL TO GET NEW MAIL
how do I refresh my email to check for new mail on my Mac?

Click on the envelope icon on the toolbar at the top of the preview pane on the right of the Mail app. It will force the fetching of mail.
You can also use the "Get All New mail" option in the Mailbox menu.
It will show the "Checking for email" message at the bottom of the left mailbox pane.
