Solution is to resize your transparent images to width higher than 360px.

Look at the example below, if you set a width of your PNG to:

· 360px or lower, the image will lose its transparency, but

· 361px or higher, the transparency remains on the image.

Be aware it is about image width only, not height. If you set your image dimensions to 360x1000px it will still lose its transparency, so the width is important here, don't ask me why. I've had this problem and solved it this way, by resizing my transparent images to width higher than 360px.

The thing is that this shouldn't be happening - optimized storage or not. Yes, one solution is to save PNG's to Files BUT there are plenty of apps on the iPhone that will only let you choose images from Photos (instagram etc). This has to be a bug that hasn't been addressed.

I tested a white text on transparent from my Photos and used it when working in Adobe Express on iPhone and the transparency game through - but when creating a story on Instagram, the same image was added as a white box.

My last point is this: we should be able to see what the PNG is of if we use a white shape or text. This just has to be a bug - there are so many people who do creative work on their iPhones and this just needs fixing!!!

One workaround that works - when creating an Instagram story (or you're in any other app where the transparency isn't working) : COPY the transparent image in Photos (it's under the 3 dots next to edit) and then PASTE the image when you use the Aa (add text) option.

Just a workaround until Apple fixes this - cause I ain't holding my breath for that.

I'm dealing with this as well. Trying to use a PNG photo I made on my laptop (verified it had transparency), airdropping it to my iphone so I can add it to my instagram story on top of another photo. It has a white background when I look at it in photos and when I use it in Instagram. I have done this in the past and have other older photos in my phone that are PNGs with transparency and they work just fine (did this exact process but with the older photo, no issues). Something has changed with PNG photos being stored recently, but the ability to have transparency is still there, just being overridden. Annoying.

Nope!! Changing it greater than 361 width DOES NOT WORK. Either does turning off OPTIMIZING PHOTOS. This is annoying. Anyone with an actual answer on this?

My process. Save text/logo as a png-24 file and drop into iphone photos. Has a white background and Video shop app shows as white. Video shop app takes transparent photos so its not the app.

Where are you downloading from? Have you tried downloading to the Desktop, checking them with Preview to see if the transparency is there before importing into Photos?

The Photos library does not display transparent pngs and gifs as transparent. It gives them a white background in my Library.

Export the png file as a Unmodified Original and test see if they are have transparent background or not.

FIXED!!

NOT WORKING PROCESS: Save text/logo with OUTERGLOW as a png24 file from Photoshop, and drop into Photos app on mac/iphone photos. File has white background when dropped into other apps like Videoshop (which i am using for this) NO BUENO!!

WORKING PROCESS: Save text/logo (WITH NO OUTERGLOW) and 2000 pixels width as a JPG with a solid background. Drop file into photo app on mac or airdrop to phone from mac. Find image on iphone and hold image and select SHARE>SAVE IMAGE. This will give you the transparent file. So with text (like a date) it sometimes works. Usually when you hold the image it wants to add a date on your phone since the iPhone thinks it's so smart. Hope this helps.
