Apple homepod - handover music without iOS device?

Good morning,

First of all thanks for the people willing to assist in this topic.

Recently I got an Apple Homepod to play as well as radio stations that are publicly available and Apple Music.

Siri at this point is not that very usable in my native language so we often use an iPhone/iPad to start a radio station.

But when starting a radio station from an iOS device seems to bind the stream to that device, and not the home pod.

We see a large battery drain for example, or if I leave the house the streaming stops;

So the handover is only partial.

Is there a way to move a stream over for 100% independent of the iOS device?

I get that for Apple Music you would need a proper subscription to allow more than one device, but radio stations should be able to stream on their own like a Sonos box.

That being said, Siri would be a solution but as long as it doesn't properly work in my native language (Flemish dutch) an alternative would be nice.

Thanks

Kristof

Hi there Kristof,

If you are trying to hand off audio from your iPhone to your HomePod, these steps from Play audio on HomePod using an iOS or iPadOS device show how to do this:

Hand off audio to HomePod
You and members of your home can transfer audio from your iPhone to your HomePod to keep playing from where you left off.

To change who can hand off audio to HomePod, see “Allow others to control audio on HomePod,” below.

Note: To hand off audio, your device must have Bluetooth turned on and be on the same Wi-Fi network as HomePod.
On an iPhone’s screen, a song is playing. The iPhone is close to the top of HomePod, and an alert says that the song is transferring to HomePod.
1. On your iPhone, go to Settings > General > AirPlay & Handoff, then make sure Transfer to HomePod is turned on.
2. Hold your iPhone near the top of HomePod.

To move audio from HomePod to your iOS device, hold your iPhone near the top of HomePod. On iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 models, hold your iPhone near the top of HomePod, then tap Transfer to iPhone.

Also, if you would like to improve Siri interaction with your HomePod in your native language, we encourage you to submit your feedback about your experience using this link: Feedback - HomePod - Apple

Take care!

Hey Ben_Z1,

Thanks for that answer - I can confirm that 'Transfer to HomePod' was turned on by default, but not 'Handoff'

I'm going to try that through the course of the next days and see if that works.

To confirm, the transfer from music was working fine when 'tapping' the iPhone to the HomePod and Vica Versa.

The media stream failed however when I left home (WiFi network) while other people were still at home, implying that the music was redirect through my device.

(And I checked if there would be any scenes that said: stop music when leaving home - Which there are none)

That said, i'll try the handoff method and confirm later on this thread.
