Manually-entered URL disappears on pressing <Enter>

Safari version: 16.3 (18614.4.6.1.5)

Ventura 13.2; Apple M1 Max.

* click on location bar at top of safari

* type url (e.g. https://youtube.com)

* press enter

* most times the page loads fine

* every once in a while, the location bar is cleared but no page is loaded. No error message is returned; history does not show the item.

This is defective behavior. I note that others have reported this issue since at least 2020: URL address disappears after enering - Apple Community

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 12.6

Hi jlangr,

As this would be unexpected behavior from Safari, we'd recommend making sure you're on the latest version of macOS your Mac will support.

Update macOS on Mac - Apple Support

Once updated, if you notice the issue persists, we'd also recommend checking for possible extensions in Safari and isolate if the problem continues with them disabled.
