MacOS 13.4 Ventura - External Monitor no longer detected. Worked until the update to 13.4

Congratulations, Apple, MacOS 13.4 has completely eliminated my ability to use an external display. Up until the 13.4 update, I was using an external display to extend my video across the MacBook display and the external display. No longer since 13.4.

I have now tried three different USB Type-C docking stations that I know have worked in the past, and none of them will connect to my external monitor. What is going on?

I am using Mac Studio M1 and I had the same issue after updating to the latest MacOS Ventura 13.4.

My monitor setup: 2x Benq monitors. One connected via HDMI and one via USB-C. USB-C connection is affected.

I tried this and it worked for me.

  1. Disconnect the USB-C monitor from either the monitor or Mac. Keep the HDMI monitor on.
  2. Go to System Setting.
  3. Go to Display.
  4. Select any other resolutions. Return to your preferred resolution.
  5. Re-connect the USB-C to the monitor.

This worked for me.

If you only have one monitor, I guess you have to try other connection/options. I know that HDMI works in this update.

Currently known issue: When web browser is in full screen in either monitor, the other monitor is blacked out. I think this is still unresolved. I do not know how to feedback to Apple and I don't have time for that. Hope Apple can patch it up soon.

Best Regards.

Thank you.

I had previously tried detect displays, restarting, pulling cables, etc.

After the last restart, I re-searched the issue online and found this post. The first two didn't seem to apply but I figured wouldn't hurt trying the unplug usb-c at the (MB Pro Intel) port...

Voila, the monitor came back on and was recognized (VP2768-4K) as it has been for a long time until this issue arose yesterday (Not sure why it started yesterday 2024-01-03 for me).

TLDR:

  • symptom 2 different (VP2768-4K,34UC89G)external monitors, 1 HDMI (34UC89G) 1 USB-C (VP2768-4K), but both monitors show as 34UC89G (whereas previously they were correctly detected.
  • Solution (for me): restart mac, unplug then replug in the USB-C connected monitor at the mac usb-c port.

Hi,

Can you use usb-c port to other devise ?

Because I have same situation and I thaught issue cause by video signal. But my MBA’s usb-c port can’t connect other devise too. I can use other one port.

I use adopt daisy chain MBA→(usb-c)→DELL monitor→(usb-c)→Thunderbolt doc.

Of course this is not a legitimate solution as my usb-c port remains unusable, pending an update resolution by Apple, but I hope this helps everyone.

I have three USB-C docking stations that I was able to try. All three worked fine extending my display with my Windows laptop, but none worked with my MacBook Pro M1.

I have no clue how it got fixed except we had a transformer blow in our neighborhood, and when the power came back on a few seconds later, it was working again.

Hi All, i have the update as well. I have the MacBook Air with 2 external monitors connected that were working fine up until the update over night.

The main display and the 1st external we were working and the 2nd external wasnt.

I have restarted the machine many times and followed a few of the solutuions. After all this, now the 1st external monitor is not coming on.

Any one have a solution?

I have a MacMini M2 Pro and I've always used two monitors on it, both the same: LG 27 144hz. One of the monitors I use via direct HDMI and the other via cable on the usb cable c > displayport.

Today I was away from the computer for about 2 hours and when I returned the monitor on the right, which I use via usb c > displayport, stopped being recognized on the MacMini.

There was no power outage while I was away, because when I got back everything was on. Nobody moved. Absolutely nothing happened. Even this morning it worked correctly.

Note: I have a Macbook M1 Pro from the company that I work from and the second monitor is working on it (using an hdmi cable), giving indications that the problem is supposedly in the usb c > displayport cable.

Everything was working until today morning...

My Studio Display arrived today and it isnt connecting to either my air or pro, both on latest ventura OS, its powered on as its charging my laptops, just isnt displaying as an option in the display settings... ive tried everything!!

The whole point of sticking with apple was so I can just plug and play, and this is what I relayed to my manager when making a case to expese it, pretty embarrassing now if ive to go to IT!

Have you tried using your monitor on another device? I tested it today and it looks like the DisplayPort input stopped working. I did the following test: I bought a new cable (usb c / displayport) and connected it to the monitor that had a problem, it still didn't work. It couldn't possibly be the cable, because the cable is new. So I decided to get the new cable and connect it to my other monitor (they are two identical monitors) and it worked correctly on displayport, so the problem is the monitor. Somehow the DisplayPort input on my monitor 2 has stopped working for no apparent reason.
