MacOS 13.4 Ventura - External Monitor no longer detected. Worked until the update to 13.4

Congratulations, Apple, MacOS 13.4 has completely eliminated my ability to use an external display. Up until the 13.4 update, I was using an external display to extend my video across the MacBook display and the external display. No longer since 13.4.

I have now tried three different USB Type-C docking stations that I know have worked in the past, and none of them will connect to my external monitor. What is going on?

I actually wound up resolving this by unplugging the monitor for a few minutes and then plugging it back in. It seems like the update process put the monitor into some state that it couldn't recover from - a state that simply turning the monitor off and on again with the power button doesn't help with (the power button apparently doesn't fully reset the monitor).

The monitor resumed working as normal after being unplugged for awhile. I vaguely recall having to do something similar after a previous macOS update, so maybe this issue isn't specific to Ventura.

It's strange what seems to work on some macs and not others. I'm on a 2017 iMac. Nothing worked for me either, but as I NEED a 2nd screen for my workflow - I picked up a new LG 27 in monitor (MN60T) and . . . viola it worked. I have no idea why but I'm just relieved to be past this issue. It could be that some fixes only work with specific monitors.

If you get desperate, maybe pick up the monitor that I did. You shouldn't have to, of course, but when needs must.

I won't be applying any more Apple OS updates going forward until after I determine they have not caused issues for others. The amount of stress this caused, coupled with the lost productivity, have made me far more skeptical of new updates they release.

I have three USB-C docking stations that I was able to try. All three worked fine extending my display with my Windows laptop, but none worked with my MacBook Pro M1.

I have no clue how it got fixed except we had a transformer blow in our neighborhood, and when the power came back on a few seconds later, it was working again.

Hi All, i have the update as well. I have the MacBook Air with 2 external monitors connected that were working fine up until the update over night.

The main display and the 1st external we were working and the 2nd external wasnt.

I have restarted the machine many times and followed a few of the solutuions. After all this, now the 1st external monitor is not coming on.

Any one have a solution?

My Studio Display arrived today and it isnt connecting to either my air or pro, both on latest ventura OS, its powered on as its charging my laptops, just isnt displaying as an option in the display settings... ive tried everything!!

The whole point of sticking with apple was so I can just plug and play, and this is what I relayed to my manager when making a case to expese it, pretty embarrassing now if ive to go to IT!

1. So it finally works! Designers need to go back and reconsidering the UX/UI.

a “tiny” modal appears to ask you to connect the external monitor! I overlooked it completely, navigated away!
Either give 2 points of entry as is, or:
make a bigger modal and disable navigating away
2. allow the user to give permissions to connect via the display settings.

What "tiny modal" is this? Is this related to DisplayLink?

It would be useful to see a screenshot of that.

Well, here we go again. The 13.4.1 update did exactly the same thing. My MacBook Pro M1 reboot, and the external monitor is no longer detected. Massive Fail Apple. I’ll try the things suggested (again), but my MacBook seems destined to be just a laptop rather than my primary…at least until Apple can figure out the problem and remediate their updates. Sure am glad my Microsoft Surface Book doesn’t have this problem.
