No password provided error in email

I have gone round and round, trying everything to be able to SEND emails from my Apple devices (Phone, iPad, iPad mini). I can receive just fine, but can't send. I get the 'no password provided' error, but nothing fixes it. I've changed passwords, but it still gives me the same error. I normally use my PC for my email (Thunderbird accounts) but will be traveling and have to rely on my iPad.

Gmail works fine.

I’ve told you twice. Here is the third try:

  • Tap Settings
  • Tap Mail
  • Tap Accounts
  • Tap on the name of the email account
  • Tap where it says Account again (at the top)
  • Tap on SMTP
  • Tap on primary server
  • Enter your username and password

If at any step you don’t see what I described post what you do see.

That's what I've done numerous times, but above you said I should be in the Settings screen, not the Mail one.

I've done exactly what you've shown above. I'm doing it on my phone at the moment, but it should be the same on all my devices

Host Name: mail.terryodell.com

User Name: my emaill address

Password - my password

Use SSL: on

Authentication: Password checked

Server Port: 587

Well, whoever you spoke to was wrong, and I’m afraid, as you’ve done the right things, that you will have to work with them.

Try just using just your name rather than the full email address for username.

BTW, as it’s not a great idea to post your full email address on the internet unless you want a lot of spam, and, as I’ve seen what you have looks correct, I’ve asked the hosts to remove the screen shot.

I have a gmail account; but my other 2 accounts have been around forever, and I kind of wanted to be able to stay in touch, at least minimally. At this point, I fear it is what it is, and if perhaps after I get back, I'll go down the mountain to the Apple store and see if they can troubleshoot it for me. I have this 'black thumb' when it comes to technology, I fear. Much as I don't like using webmail, that might be my only solution for now.

Thanks everyone for trying to help.

Ive done this step by step multiple times on different devices. Ive also done this with the provider (TheMessagingCo) step by step, multiple times. I have typed and cut and pasted my password to ensure no password errors. The password is correct as I can log in via the webmail portal. I just can't add it to my iPhone or mac emails.

I have deleted and then added a new account multiple times.

Nothing helps.

Given webmail works, it seems to be an apple issue. But...

Any suggestion/advice would be greatly appreciated!

There are 2 possibilities I can think of:

Do you use VPN? If so, delete the VPN profile in Settings/General/VPN & Device Management/VPN. Don't just turn it off; delete the profile.

Does the email account have 2 factor authentication? If it does, you need to generate an app-specific password to use with the Apple Mail app. The instructions for that should be on the email host’s website.

I had the same message when setting up a new IMAP account on iOS. It was working fine on MacOS. Resolved by resetting the password on the mail server to not have any punctuation characters, removing the old account, restarting iPad. I initially got the same dialog when verifying the account, continued, tried to get mail, got same message went to settings deleted password and re entered and it worked!
