Hello ~ The iPhone 7 doesn’t have the hardware necessary to run iOS 16. If you require iOS you will need a newer model iPhone. You may update your iPhone 7 to iOS 15.7.6.

An iPhone 7 cannot be updated beyond iOS 15.8. It doesn't have the hardware needed to run anything higher.

If you have an iPhone, you have iOS.
But you will not have iOS 16 on an iPhone 7. Only a version of iOS that the iPhone 7 supports. For the iPhone 7, the latest release of iOS 15 is the end of the line. Today, that's iOS 15.8.2. If iOS 15 is not recent enough for you, you will need to replace your iPhone 7 with a more recent iPhone.

I don’t recommend updating your IOS anymore, it will just slow down your phone
This thread is a year old. I’d hope that OP has gotten their answer by now, but then we’re still here and answering the same question a year on.
In performance terms, iPhone 7 with A10 (2016-era two performance two efficiency cores (2P2E) with 2 GB memory) with ~757 / ~967 performance ratings as compared with, say, the iPhone XS and iPhone XR with A12 (2P4E with 4 GB) with ~1300 / ~2234.
In comparative terms, iPhone 7 has half the memory and half the single-core performance of the oldest iPhone models supported with iOS 17. Newer iPhone models are yet more capable.
Per this thread, an iPhone 7 isn’t getting updates past iOS 15, so any updates are likely for security issues. Which I would apply.
Because iOS 16 uses hardware features that are not available in an iPhone 7.

Hello and welcome to the thread.
If you are running iOS 15 (currently 15.8.2), then you are running the latest available iOS version.
iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are not supported on iOS 16 and later.
If you have an app that requires iOS 16 or later, you will need a newer (used, refurb) or new iPhone.
Any recent iPhone will be substantially more capable than an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus, as well.
Because the iPhone does have have the processing power to handle the requirements of iOS 16.
If you want to run iOS 16, you will need an iPhone 8 or higher model.

Did you read the thread you posted to? iPhone 7 LACKS the hardware required to update to iOS 16.

Nothing update
If your iPhone 7 is running the latest release of iOS 15, there are no further updates for it.
The latest release of iOS 15 – iOS 15.8.1 – came out just a week ago. The one before it – iOS 15.8 – came out at the end of last October. So if you have an iPhone 7, it may be worth checking once in a while to see if Apple has come out with a new iOS 15 security update.

Don't bother checking for iOS 16, 17, …, as those will never be available for the iPhone 7.

iOS 16? With iPhone 8 or newer, yes. With an older-hardware device such as iPhone 7, no. No iOS 16 for iPhone 7.

when will next update
iOS 15.8.2 is current for iPhone 7.
We don’t know when (if?) the next iOS 15 update for iPhone 7 will be available.
iPhone 7 isn’t getting iOS 16, just as iPhone 8, and iPhone X aren’t getting the current iOS 17.
If you want or need an app that needs newer iOS, then you’ll need a newer or new iPhone.
So does this mean I need an upgraded newphone
Yes, if you have an iPhone 6 or 7, since these iPhones cannot run iOS 16.
An iPhone 8 can run iOS 16, as well as other higher models. But, if you are going to go for a new phone, make sure that it it will run iOS 17. That would mean an iPhone XR or higher model.

You can ask as nicely and as often as you wish. If you own an iPhone 7 however, the answer is NEVER going to change. If you need or want a higher iOS version than what your phone supports which iOS 15.7.9, then you MUST buy a newer, more modern iPhone.
Re: “ios 16 need please!”
If you need iOS 16 or later, you need a newer iPhone. The iPhone 7 will not run those versions of iOS - no matter how much you need them, or how many times you say “please.”
