Unable to load video / An error occurred while loading a higher-quality version of this video

Dear Team,

on many of my older photos and videos, i get the „Unable to load video“ pop-up as mentioned in the title. I tried everything fixing it: i forced a restart of the iphone, i‘m up to date with the software, i have 70GB free to use storage, i toggled the „favorite“ butten on and off, disconnected the photos galery from icloud and turned it back on, turned on „download and keep originals“, but nothing works. Do you have an idea how to solve this?

Thank you all in advance,

Jonas

So, paying for 1TB of iCloud storage and also running into the annoying problem myself, I have an even better solution (bandage) for thus problem. When you see this error, it means one of the photos used in the memory does not have its high quality version not fully downloaded from the iCloud database. In my case, the Xmas memory that was auto-created had this issue but I could not simply duplicate the video and replace it as the memory itself wouldn’t allow me to add other photos to the set. So:

  1. 3 dots, upper right corner of the memory.
  2. Select Manage Photos, and select / deselect every photo / video and spot the ones with a mini cloud icon on the bottom right corner of its thumbnail. This means it is not fully downloaded from iCloud (or at least its not marked as such in the photo app’s registry due to a bug).
  3. Long press media with the icon and Show in All Photos.
  4. Go to media and select Edit.
  5. Go to the trim function and trim 1 second of it from the end. Save Video.
  6. Edit it again and set the trim back to full length.
  7. Now iCloud has marked this media in its registry as fully downloaded from iCloud. You should be able to download the memory now and share as normal.

I am also experiencing this issue, videos that I have created in final cut pro and added to the my photos library, are now receiving the error message Unable to load video / An error occurred while loading a higher-quality version of this video. This is accross multiple phones and users as the videos are also in a shared album.

Update. I Called apple support. They didn’t know whats up with this. They said i should check my icloud.com and check are videos there. I did check it but looks like videos on icloud.com dont show before 2021. So tomorrow I will call them again and say that my videos before 2021 are not visible in icloud.com. This is really worrying. But then again I know that they are not all gone because some of the videos do work. But most of my videos before 2021 get this error message. This is a icloud problem and this sucks!! Again, network works fine, there is free strorage on my iphone and I have latest Ios installed. This is fairly new problem i think this problem started about 1-2 months ago…

I'm having the same issue. I can't view the video at all and it doesn't appear in the icloud browser. Only affecting videos of 4k and 30 fps, everything else is fine. I can't edit and then duplicate the video. I can't share the video to any other platform. Viewing the video file in windows file explorer shows a smaller file size than the iphone reports, so I suspect there's a chunk of data missing in the cloud somewhere that I can't download.

this happened to me recently and I realized that all the videos where I'm getting this "unable to load video" error, were recorded when my phone was at best below 20% battery.

some are short clips, some longer, but the error is the same and I remember the point in the day where I noticed I was in the red on battery, and those are the only ones I'm getting the error.

so, maybe a preventative note for future shoots.

Hey guys I think I know why it’s happening and how to solve this! It usually happens with airdropped, shared videos, or edited videos that were not taken on your phone. The reason why this may be happening is because the other person simply had a higher quality phone than you (or lower) and your phone fails to load the full quality version if this exact video. The reason on how your can solve this is to accept all the software updated, keep updating your phone, and try to avoid taking videos on other peoples devices, but apple, this shouldn’t have to be a problem, I know your doing all you can to fix this but I hope this comment is the solution to some of your problems.

When did this start?

My problems started sometime between Monday Oct 30 and Friday Nov 3. The same videos played with out problems on Sunday Oct 29.

Is it affecting all videos of the same file type and codec in your shared library?

It seems like Apple has changed something , maybe not supporting mp4 and H.264 anymore.

Going to experiment with higher FFS. My videos are only 10 FFS.

I am relieved to have found this page as I have started digitising all our old home videos and they were working perfectly until the end of October. Now ALL shared videos do not work BUT they do work on the original device and in my photo album, itself.

This has to be a bug but it affects Iphone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV so I am guessing it must be an iCloud issue. Do Apple read these posts? What is the best way to bring it to their attention?

I have had this particular problem on and off for AT LEAST TWO YEARS, probably THREE... It's always during around a new IOS update. Surprise Surprise. They KNOW this problem. Currently, it's affecting all of my new videos and some of my old videos that are longer than 4 minutes. What's weird this time is that sometimes they would play and then when I go to another video and come back, that same video that played 3 seconds ago wouldn't play anymore. Then I wait the next day, it would play again in the morning. But now I'm back to square one - they aren't playing again. Hence, why I am here along with everybody else. It's so incredibly frustrating. I've been through this so many times before but it's sad this is still affecting so many people. Everybody, please help send your complaints to their team nonstop until they fix it.
