hard copy of conversation
I need to create a copy of a lengthy iMessage correspondence for a legal situation. Is there a way to download the correspondence in total or do I need to do it as screen captures?

From the phone itself you would have to use screen captures. However, there are 3rd party apps for your computer that can produce neatly formatted PDFs of message threads. Two that are well regarded are TouchCopy and iMazing. Both are available for both Mac and Windows.
