Can't remove members from family sharing

i want to remove my son. He is an adult. He is using to much of my iCloud storage, and now I can’t backup my phone. I go to my settings, I hit the remove button. But he is still there, no error. Do I have to wait for him to do something on his end.

I had to get my ex off of the family sharing across devices and it was not going through on all of them by simply removing from Family Sharing on the iPhones. I did multiple restarts on the devices and called to Apple but nothing was resolving it. BUT I finally figured it out:

  • On Desktop/Laptop: open Apple Music --> click on Account at the top --> Manage Family --> remove the family member.

This finally fixed the subscription sharing across all devices. I hope this helps!

*** You could possibly do this on the iPhone/iPad by opening Apple Music --> click your initials on the top right (takes you to your Account) --> Manage Family --> takes you to Family Sharing in Settings. But this may end up having the same problem we all had. So I suggest going on your computer and managing it that way as that is the only thing that worked after multiple restarts of all devices and calls to Apple. ***

Mmm... yes, seems your son would lose access to the family iCloud, so would likely lose the synced data on his device as well. (If you delete from one, it deletes on the synced other.)

Sorry I'm no expert in this area:

Seems son would need to turn off syncing his data to iCloud from his end, in order to keep the data on his device. (He could still use the 5Gb free iCloud, or set up his own plan.)

Am guessing that you would need to turn off sharing subscriptions, (and purchase sharing if on), etc. with your son. Maybe then, removing your son from family sharing may work.

You would turn off sharing subscriptions, and Purchase Sharing in the Family Sharing settings, in the same way they were once turned on.

Eg:

Share iCloud+ with your family - Apple Support

Add a family member to your shared subscriptions - Apple Support

Thank you for trying that Jtckd30,

Surprised that restarting did not help.

As you still have your son's name listed:

You might want to try try again.

Guess this (below) is exactly what you have already done.

On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

    1. Go to Settings.
    2. Tap Family. If you don't see Family, tap your name, then tap Family Sharing.
    3. Tap the name of the family member that you want to remove.
    4. Tap Remove [your family member's name] from Family.

The only reason it might not work seems to be if your adult son was listed as being under 13 years old... you could check his Apple ID / date of birth is correct. (You would need to contact Apple Support to remove anyone listed as being under 13 years old.)

Your adult son could likely remove himself, (ie: using the linked article above)

Else you could reach out to Apple Support:

There is a "Get Support / start now" link (online chat, phone, eMail etc.)
