Hi lobster, No way! The phone does an update , not the car! Apple should apply not mercedes!!
The problem here can be in the infotainment system, or in the iPhone, or in iOS, or in the connection, among other possibilities.
If you have used a cable to connect to the infotainment system here and not Bluetooth, you will have already replaced that and ruled it out as an issue.
If not the cable, the next step is to check for infotainment system firmware updates, and for iOS updates. This usually resolves the known issues that can arise with the two immensely complicated computers operating on each end of the connection—the infotainment system, and your iPhone.
If the problems persist, contact the car manufacturer, as they are best positioned to troubleshoot this. If the problem is with iOS, the car manufacturer is best positioned to work directly with Apple to resolve this, or (potentially) to make changes to the infotainment system to work around the issues.
Even if this is an issue with the iPhone and iOS, it’s not an endemic issue with CarPlay. And if this is iOS at fault and not some oddity specific to the manufacturer’s infotainment system, it’s something that will necessarily involve both the infotainment system maintainers and Apple CarPlay maintainers to resolve, and possibly other parts of both organizations.
Could this issue be caused by the iOS update? Sure. But is the flaw in the Apple code, or in the infotainment firmware, or has (for instance) some Bluetooth giblet on either end of the connection that picked this moment to fail?
In short… Contact the infotainment system vendor. That’s usually here vehicle manufacturer. They’re best positioned to resolve this directly m or to work with Apple to resolve this. They’re also best positioned to know if and where there are issues with CarPlay; whether those are nascent, already acknowledged via TSB, or otherwise.

Had the same issue. Got it resolved doing the following:
Setting
Screen time
Contents and privacy and restrictions
Allowed apps
make sure Apple car play is turned on.
once turned on restart the phone and that should fix the issue. Fixed mine after I updated to iOS 16.6.1. Hope this helps.

Same boat. 2020 rav4 hybrid. CarPlay doesn’t always connect. When it does it drops every 2-3 minutes. Volume know will often also not work. Started immediately after 16.5 upgrade. FIX THIS APPLE
Apple isn't here. This is a user to user only forum and no one from Apple will read this or respond to you.
If you want Apple to know you're having an issue, provide Apple feedback via this link --> Feedback - iPhone - Apple
Note that most people are not having an issue. CarPlay on iOS 16.5.1 works just fine in my Genesis GV70. No one in my office seems to be having a CarPlay issue either. With CarPlay it's often not an easy diagnosis. There are many car systems out there. And it's likely your car system may need an update. What did your car manufacturer say when you let them know you were having an issue with the system? Also, have you updated to iOS 16.5.1, which was released now more than a week ago? Update your iPhone, then restart it and see if it works better for you.
Out of desperation and trying everything I finally decided to reset my infotainment settings back to factory, removed my car from Bluetooth, etc and reconnect my phone to my car and this seemed to work. Not sure why or how the iPhone update would jack things up between the infotainment system and my phone but wiping them both clean from settings on both cat infotainment and phone worked
Hello everyone, I solved the problem (although I still have not discovered what is due), resetting the factory settings section "Smartlink" of my car, initially the Apple carplay icon had suddenly disappeared among the options available in my car. The problem was the car and not the phone, as I tried in that of a friend and my phone connected to Apple carplay worked perfectly. I hope this can help you. Sorry for my bad English.
Have a nice day!
OK......see if the Forced Restart helps. And if necessary, have your iPhone forget your car in CarPlay and set it up again.
You can do so, by opening the Settings App > General > CarPlay - tap your car and then Forget This Car.

My car does not do updates. It isnt a tesla you know
if the infotainment system has CarPlay, it almost certainly has firmware. Whether it can be updated by the owner?
I updated the infotainment firmware in a decade-old pickup a while back, which cured various issues it had, and that infotainment system well predated CarPlay. It used a screwy setup and a USB stick, but it updated.
Check and update your infotainment firmware. Then un-pair, and re-pair, and try again.
Hi all, so I know this post has grown since my posting….
but to say after spending time on the phone to the Apple support team my car play is working again in my civic
we went through a series of resets…. And found that during one of the IOS updates a change to my network settings was causing my phone not to connect to the car for more than a second or two.
so reset of network and it’s back!!
I had the same issue with my iPhone 14 and 2020 Toyota Rav4. It worked fine before updating to IOS 16, but after, only maps would work when connected to CarPlay. I could see my song playing, but no sound. I tried the methods recommended by Apple several times with no luck.
What did work is resetting my infotainment system to factory default. I had to do a search on YouTube learn how to reset it, but it did the trick.
Hope it works for you!
Ok Toyota Hilux 2022 and I had the same issue with my phone and my wife’s phone.
After updating no more connection with Carplay.
So here is what I did to get it working again.
On the infotainment press Setup / General / Preferred Service
Here Toyota Online was selected.
So I changed it to Apple CarPlay and boom everything working again.
Hope this can be of any help here.

Update both your iPhone iOS and your infotainment firmware to current. For the infotainment firmware update process, check the vehicle owner's manual, or check with the vehicle dealer.
If the iPhone was previously paired with this infotainment system, unpair on the iPhone and also unpair on the infotainment system both. Again, unpair at both ends. Unpair on the iPhone CarPlay settings, and also unpair on the infotainment system settings.
If you have the Screen Time feature enabled on the iPhone, turn that off. Or in iPhone Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions, check whether Content & Privacy Restrictions is enabled, and if so then tap on Allowed Apps, and ensure CarPlay access is is enabled.
Force-restart the iPhone: Force restart iPhone - Apple Support
Re-pair it with the infotainment system. Try again.

Just an update from last post. After sitting on phone to Apple for over 2 hours & doing everything I had already done. I took the car to the dealership! They had the car for several hours and turned out to be a loose connection in the charging port! They fixed that and Since then it has been working fine.

I have a new Iphone13, on IOS16.5.1 (a) plugged into my Honda Civic and apple play works like 1 in 10 times... the rest of time shows as disconnected.
Original cable
Old phone on IOS16.5.1 works fine
Two things come to mind:
Having the same name for both phones, can often confuse the car.
Un-pair from the infotainment system, and un-pair from the iPhone, both, and then check for updates for the infotainment system and for the iPhone, re-pair, and check again.
If problems persist, contact the infotainment system vendor.
I had a similar problem with my Chevy Bolt 2018 -CarPlay stopped working. I went into car settings, to devices, and saw that CarPlay was turned off. No idea how that happened. I turned it back on and voila all is good again..very simple fix.
