I wish I had read this before we bought our new iPhone 14 Pros today and had this problem. It connects via Bluetooth but will not connect to CarPlay so I can’t access my map or anything. REALLY ****** OFF.
It still has issues at times. Make sure to connect when car is in park otherwise it won’t connect. If it comes unplugged for any reason while driving you have to stop and put into park to reconnect- never did that before. 🤷♀️
I have a 2021 Renault Koleos and same issue I'm having. CarPlay worked for a bit after 16.5 upgrade and then all of a sudden, nope, doesn't want to work anymore. Have followed all suggestions I can find for reconnecting CarPlay online and none of them work. Seems I'm just stuck with Bluetooth until a fix comes along.
Experiencing the same, today’s iOS 16.5.1 update does not fix the issue either. Apple Support stated other users are reporting the same issues but still wanted me to download the CarPlay diagnostics tool, note every time the issue occurs while I am on the road (which I think is a major safety issue), then call back by phone to send them the haptic feedback data via WiFi only- which I did not have available at the time.
The recent 16.5.1 fixed this. No issues now (I have a 2019 Chrysler Pacifica). All good. Thanks, Apple! That was rough. I didn't realize how many times I do business in the car until I didn't have access to the no-hands CarPlay anymore.
Just an update on my recent post from yesterday. While I don't believe that the 16.5.1 upgrade fixed the issue with CarPlay not working as I did it a few days ago and for a few days it still did not work. What has happened this afternoon is out of the blue, while I was driving, CarPlay suddenly kicked in and was connecting to my entertainment system again. Admittedly it did have issue with the screen being locked, however, as soon as I unlocked it everything was fine again. Let's see if this sticks and lasts.
Hello everyone, I solved the problem (although I still have not discovered what is due), resetting the factory settings section "Smartlink" of my car, initially the Apple carplay icon had suddenly disappeared among the options available in my car. The problem was the car and not the phone, as I tried in that of a friend and my phone connected to Apple carplay worked perfectly. I hope this can help you. Sorry for my bad English.
Have a nice day!
Happened to me as well in Skoda Octavia IV (VW group). After seeing the post from "peppogiappe" I just went into my car and went to infotainment menu without phone connected (I observed the issue after 15.6.1 update. The 15.6 just screwed my camera dongle connectivity with not original accessories). Then I found "SmartLink" application. I went there and found a "tail" with the Carplay icon and name of my phone. So I have connected my phone and clicked it once I have seen it is charging. Well and it connected. Then I tried to stop the car --> start it again and connect the phone straight once again. And it worked. So I do hope it will be OK. If not I can repeat this "procedure" and hope it'll work same way again (not a big hassle - better than stay not connected :) )
Just an update from last post. After sitting on phone to Apple for over 2 hours & doing everything I had already done. I took the car to the dealership! They had the car for several hours and turned out to be a loose connection in the charging port! They fixed that and Since then it has been working fine.
I have the exact same car , 2022 RAV4, with the exact same problem. Physical Volume control and steering wheel controls no longer function under iOS 16.5.1 upgrade but works fine with every other phone connection without latest iOS.
i really hope Apple are investigating this asap

I have a 2021 Toyota Rav 4 Hybrid and the problems you described are happening on my car also.
This has only been happening since the update to 16.5.1 and is so upsetting.
At one point I used "Forget this device" for my Toyota and paired it again, still the same result.
The volume control randomly works or not and as you said steering wheel buttons don't respond.
This is a maybe it will work this time or maybe not scenario!
I thought I was losing my mind!
APPLE PLEASE GET THIS BUG FIXED ASAP!
You aren't speaking to anyone from Apple here. This is a user to user only forum. Have you tried using another cable from Apple? Other's have suggested that solved this for them.
Otherwise, the common thread here is TOYOTA. You should contact Toyota for help as it is most definitely not effecting most other brands. It's not effecting my Genesis GV70 as an example. This is clearly a Toyota issue. And Toyota needs to help you.
Try the forced restart and keep a copy of the directions. Most of us members on the forum who have been around a long time, Force Restart our iPhone's after every iOS update.
And for fun, try a different cable as well.
OK......see if the Forced Restart helps. And if necessary, have your iPhone forget your car in CarPlay and set it up again.
You can do so, by opening the Settings App > General > CarPlay - tap your car and then Forget This Car.
Ik have this problem too! Iphone 8 in a Mercedes A160. carplay first worked after the update to 16.5.1 but suddenly asked for acceptance. This happenend 4 days or so and after that carplay won't start in the car. I did all that is said on the different fora but nothing works. I did "forget this car" and now it will not pair again. I also activated siri which i hate but hey, I need carplay. That also made no difference... Does apple know about this issue? How can we file a complaint?
Greets joris, the netherlands.
They won't respond to you. But someone at Apple will read it. The thing about CarPlay is there are SO many variables, when dealing with different car brands and the infotainment systems in different cars. It's not possible for Apple to resolve all CarPlay issues, as Apple didn't design the Infotainment systems in any cars. When you have an issue, its often best to contact the manufacturer of your car, which may be aware of an issue and even have a system update for your car.

Hi lobster, No way! The phone does an update , not the car! Apple should apply not mercedes!!
The problem here can be in the infotainment system, or in the iPhone, or in iOS, or in the connection, among other possibilities.
If you have used a cable to connect to the infotainment system here and not Bluetooth, you will have already replaced that and ruled it out as an issue.
If not the cable, the next step is to check for infotainment system firmware updates, and for iOS updates. This usually resolves the known issues that can arise with the two immensely complicated computers operating on each end of the connection—the infotainment system, and your iPhone.
If the problems persist, contact the car manufacturer, as they are best positioned to troubleshoot this. If the problem is with iOS, the car manufacturer is best positioned to work directly with Apple to resolve this, or (potentially) to make changes to the infotainment system to work around the issues.
Even if this is an issue with the iPhone and iOS, it’s not an endemic issue with CarPlay. And if this is iOS at fault and not some oddity specific to the manufacturer’s infotainment system, it’s something that will necessarily involve both the infotainment system maintainers and Apple CarPlay maintainers to resolve, and possibly other parts of both organizations.
Could this issue be caused by the iOS update? Sure. But is the flaw in the Apple code, or in the infotainment firmware, or has (for instance) some Bluetooth giblet on either end of the connection that picked this moment to fail?
In short… Contact the infotainment system vendor. That’s usually here vehicle manufacturer. They’re best positioned to resolve this directly m or to work with Apple to resolve this. They’re also best positioned to know if and where there are issues with CarPlay; whether those are nascent, already acknowledged via TSB, or otherwise.
