Hi lobster, No way! The phone does an update , not the car! Apple should apply not mercedes!!
The problem here can be in the infotainment system, or in the iPhone, or in iOS, or in the connection, among other possibilities.
If you have used a cable to connect to the infotainment system here and not Bluetooth, you will have already replaced that and ruled it out as an issue.
If not the cable, the next step is to check for infotainment system firmware updates, and for iOS updates. This usually resolves the known issues that can arise with the two immensely complicated computers operating on each end of the connection—the infotainment system, and your iPhone.
If the problems persist, contact the car manufacturer, as they are best positioned to troubleshoot this. If the problem is with iOS, the car manufacturer is best positioned to work directly with Apple to resolve this, or (potentially) to make changes to the infotainment system to work around the issues.
Even if this is an issue with the iPhone and iOS, it’s not an endemic issue with CarPlay. And if this is iOS at fault and not some oddity specific to the manufacturer’s infotainment system, it’s something that will necessarily involve both the infotainment system maintainers and Apple CarPlay maintainers to resolve, and possibly other parts of both organizations.
Could this issue be caused by the iOS update? Sure. But is the flaw in the Apple code, or in the infotainment firmware, or has (for instance) some Bluetooth giblet on either end of the connection that picked this moment to fail?
In short… Contact the infotainment system vendor. That’s usually here vehicle manufacturer. They’re best positioned to resolve this directly m or to work with Apple to resolve this. They’re also best positioned to know if and where there are issues with CarPlay; whether those are nascent, already acknowledged via TSB, or otherwise.
Glad it worked out for you guys who have the reset options, I’m not seeing a Smartlink setting on the Toyota Tacoma infotainment system- maybe someone more knowledgeable in Toyota’s can advise.
Same boat. 2020 rav4 hybrid. CarPlay doesn’t always connect. When it does it drops every 2-3 minutes. Volume know will often also not work. Started immediately after 16.5 upgrade. FIX THIS APPLE
I'm having this exact issue with Volume and control buttons on my 2022 Rav4 Hybrid XLE.
16.5.1 is a bad update!
I have a new Iphone13, on IOS16.5.1 (a) plugged into my Honda Civic and apple play works like 1 in 10 times... the rest of time shows as disconnected.
Original cable
Old phone on IOS16.5.1 works fine

I have tried a new cable already :-(

Hi lobster, No way! The phone does an update , not the car! Apple should apply not mercedes!!
thanx!
In my case it isn’t the car….. my old iPhone still works perfect…. New one on latest IOS doesnt
Mine is Honda….. so again suggests IOS as multiple car manufacturers
My car does not do updates. It isnt a tesla you know
CarPlay disconnected in my BMW after I downloaded iOS 16.6. I am unable to re-connect CarPlay or Bluetooth on my iPhone 14 Pro Max.
After the update, my vehicle showed no phone connected and the phone will not connect via Bluetooth or CarPlay.
So, there was nothing to disconnect and reconnect.
