I don’t know if you had time to read the rest of the discussion here or if it was on another forum for Apple where I saw the issue. I had this problem after I downloaded the 16.5 as did a lot of other people on different iPhones. And some people had it after downloading the 16. Apple finally fixed it with a 16.6 update is the latest one it’s not the 16.5.1(c) update . I was very upset with Apple because they never claimed that that caused the phone to get hot and to drain the battery quickly. I was going to go into Best Buy to exchange my phone because I have the warranty on it still. But after I downloaded the 16.6 iOS update, my phone was back to acting normal. It does not get hot and the battery doesn’t drain. It’s back to the way it was before the 16.5 update. So before you do anything I would try updating the to the 16.6 iOS update. Other people have also said online that help them and have fixed their phone also doing that. I am sorry I am dictating this on Siri so I’m sorry if it’s not understandable anyway take care and I hope this works for you bye

I have exactly the same issue but on all my iOS devices. It seems it's coming from an insane amount of traffic going to and from iCloud. If you reset your mobile data stats and come off wifi you should see what I mean, it is doing about a gb in 10 mins. Not backing up just "messaging services", I have just done some analysis on my wifi network and all the data is coming from iCloud, so when you drop off wifi it's hammering the data connection. Sadly I don't have a fix yet I am still working on it, but wanted you to know your not alone.
Good News! Just upgraded to IOS 16.6 and my phone immediately cooled down. For everyone suffering with IOS 16.5 battery issues. Please do the latest update!
On Page 2 of this is the answer- most everyone who upgraded to the 16.6
had their phones return to normal. I had those horrible problems & after upgrading to the 16.6 my phone was cured! It was a miracle !! LOL try it !
take care
I was having the same problems and upgraded to iOS 16.6 and it is fixed!
Update to 16.6 and that should fix it as it has for everyone else who commented above.
to compare
model: iPhone 14 Pro
iOS: 16.5
network: wifi
background refresh: off
maximum battery capacity: 100%
Youtube 58m 13%
Facebook 1h47m 19%
Safari 58m 36% and overheating
Luckily there’s a fix… upgrade to IOS 16.6 and your battery issues will go away! Not sure what was wrong with IOS 16.5? But it caused the phone to heat-up and use battery power at an alarming rate!
Wont disabling cellular data under iCloud fix this issue, at least when not connected to WiFi?
Turn off 5g completely and it should last!

Is your iPhone hot?
My experience says this is purely caused by some third-party app that you may have installed.
I am not aware of the ambient temperature in which you are using the iPhone. However --> Keeping iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch within acceptable ...
Store the device where the temperature is between -20º and 45º C (-4º to 113º F). Don’t leave the device in your car, because temperatures in parked cars can exceed this range.
Use iOS devices where the ambient temperature is between 0º and 35º C (32º to 95º F). Low- or high-temperature conditions might cause the device to change its behavior to regulate its temperature. Using an iOS device in very cold conditions outside of its operating range might temporarily shorten battery life and could cause the device to turn off. Battery life will return to normal when you bring the device back to higher ambient temperatures. Using an iOS device in very hot conditions can permanently shorten battery life.
as i said i just was updated to 16.5 yesterday so apps, settings, ... are the same except it was 16.4.1.
and it happen only while i'm using Safari, i'm not sure exactly temperature but it was very hot feels like 50-70ºC, it never get hot like that before even while playing games
Thank u for confirming what I was hoping was real!! I had updated to the 16.5.1(c) & Nothing changed! My iPhone 14 was still getting hot when charging it & the Battery was rapidly draining ! So when I upgraded to the 16.6 I wasn’t holding my breath! But my phone so far has not gotten warm nor is the Battery rapidly draining!! I still have my fingers crossed though!
