How to reduce storage of images & videos on iphone?

I have 1TB of cloud space but the amount of storage on my iPhone (for pictures & videos) is still 6.69Gb. How can I bring this down to a couple of Mb?

The setting “optimize storage” has been selected, but does not bring the amount lower that 6,6Gb.

Please advice what can be done to bring down the storage. Thank you.

  • Having 1TB of iCloud storage to backup one device is an overkill. I believe that a 200GB plan is sufficient for 3 to 4 different Apple devices.
  • iCloud storage space does not increase the storage space of your iPhone 12. I believe that you already knew this.
  • You are correct that the “Optimize Storage” feature will store your original quality photos on iCloud and a small size photo on your iPhone. This takes up less space on your iPhone while maintaining the actual size on iCloud. This will free up space on your iPhone while making good use of iCloud.
  • Questions for you: Can that 6.6GB of space, that the photos and videos have taken on your iPhone, be the space after the items have already been optimized? How many photos and videos do you have on your iPhone?

You have about 35K images and I am certain that the reduced space of 6.6GB is AFTER space optimization has been applied. I bet that the actual space saved on your iPhone is over 100GB+. The 6.6GB space cannot be reduced further.

You are correct that the next tier iCloud plan after 200GB is 2TB. Your iPhone has a lot of data and your choice to subscribe to a 2TB iCloud plan is correct based on the available plan tiers.

hi Axel,

Thank you for your reply!

Yes, the 6.6GB is the amount of storage space my photos still take on my phone. I was wondering if there were ways to bring this down, as this is still on the high side. From a numbers perspective, I believe there are about 35k images in the cloud today.

On the icloud plan. I am currently using 300GB, so I have 1.7TB of free space. However, when I checked the plans, I could not select a plan that is 500GB. It went from 200GB to 2TB. Is that correct?

Thank you for your help!
