I am walking on a treadmill 3 mi a day and my Apple Health always under counts my activity. I wear an apple watch and don't have my phone on me. How is it getting this data and is there any way to make it more accurate?

The Health app on your iPhone uses the built-in motion sensors to track your steps. It relies on the data it receives from these sensors to estimate the number of steps taken. However, it's important to note that the accuracy of step counting can vary depending on various factors such as your walking style, arm movement, and the placement of your iPhone while walking.

Unfortunately, there is no direct way to manually adjust the step length in the Health app without additional devices or accessories like an Apple Watch. The app calculates step length based on factors like your height and stride length, which are typically estimated using algorithms.

If you find that the step count in the Health app is consistently inaccurate, you can try the following tips to improve its accuracy:

  1. Carry Your iPhone Properly: To get more accurate step counts, carry your iPhone in a pocket or a belt clip closer to your body's center of mass. This can help the motion sensors better detect your steps.
  2. Walk Naturally: Maintain a natural walking style with normal arm movement. Avoid swinging your arms too vigorously or keeping them too still, as this can affect the accuracy of step counting.
  3. Calibrate Using a Known Distance: If you have access to a known distance (e.g., a measured track), you can manually calibrate the step count by comparing the distance you walk with the recorded step count in the Health app. To do this, open the Health app, go to the "Browse" tab, tap on "Walking+Running Distance," and then tap on "Data Sources & Access." From there, you can select your iPhone's motion sensor and manually enter the distance walked to recalibrate the step count.

While these tips can help improve the accuracy of step counting, it's important to keep in mind that the Health app's step count is an estimate and may not always be 100% accurate.

There is no such option on my phone. There is no "Motion Sensor" option there. The "Walking & Running Distance" uses GPS data, not step count. Where are you getting this suggestion? If you're using ChatGPT, you should always double check what it tells you as it makes things up.

Also, the correct Path is Browse>Activity>Walking & Running Distance.

Changing the step length wouldn't change the number of steps show. How did you determine the number of steps? Have you gone to the Steps page in Health, gone all the way to the bottom and tapped on "Show all data". The phone is pretty good about not double counting steps but sometimes it happens. If you have some other app that is linked to Health, that might also be feeding data.

Changing the length won’t change the amount of steps shown. But even the slightest movement that your phone could consider you talking a step will count. Even if you drop your on your couch it could think it’s you walking up the stairs. Fitbits are much better tracking distance and how many steps your ACTUALLY taken then phones are
