iPad Pro won’t charge with USB-C to USB-C cable

I saw this posted elsewhere, but the post was old and there were no real fixes offered.

My iPad Pro 11 inch has been a trooper for as long as I’ve owned it. A while ago it stopped charging if I was using a USB-C to USB-C cable. It wil charge with a USB-A to USB-C cable, although sometimes I have to flip the USB-C connector over in order for it to begin charging.

it is not the cable or the adapter, as I am able to use the USB-C to USB-C cables on other devices just fine. There is someone in the OS that is detecting what kind of cable is being used and and says “Nope.”

Has anyone had any luck with Apple figuring out a way to have it accept a USB-C to USB-C for charging? This is really annoying, as I know it isn’t the cable, power adapter, nor the connector hardware on the iPad itself.

First, USB-C cables are fully reversible - and as such, it should make no difference at all to functioning if the connecting plug is reversed. If flipping the plug orientation makes a difference, either the cable or its connector are defective, or the mating device connector has been damaged.

Per your description, the USB-C connector on your iPad may have been damaged, or has an associated fault.

These support pages should help with troubleshooting general battery and charging issues:

Troubleshooting generally requires substitution of the Power Adapter and cable for another known-good item. Most models of iPad require a Power Adapter rated at 12W or greater to reliably charge. 5W Power Adapters intended for older models of iPhone are inadequate to charge an iPad; if the iPad charges at all, charging will be very slow. Recent models of iPad are supplied with a 20W USB-C Power Adapter.

Be aware that many computer USB ports cannot source sufficient power to charge an iPad. Unless explicitly designed for charging connected devices, computer USB ports are typically limited to 0.5-1A @5V (i.e., 2.5-5.0W).

If you continue to experience difficulties when using an appropriate Power Adapter of 12W or greater, you might be best advised to seek assistance directly from from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively, if you have access to another Apple device, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

I had a similar problem but it was entirely my fault. I had left my ipad pro 11 outside and it received a quarter of an inch of rain.... The result was that the usb-c port was totally dead and so i now use the smart connectors to recharge my ipad and this works perfectly. Apple were going to charge me close to 700 euro for a repair and never suggested this route to salvage my ipad. Why not? Any all happy now...

USB-A to USB-C works every time. I bought a cable from Amazon to at least have something to charge my iPad. Since I charge my iPhone wirelessly it’s not as big an issue on that device. Something is clearly not right on iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 with the USB-C charging. I haven’t seen anything with regards to a fix coming either. Apple keeps telling me to just replace the device but it’s clearly not the device.

Regarding LotusPilot's response, it doesn't make sense that flipping the way the cable is inserted would make a difference in its ability to charge, and I'm only using OEM or cables sold as MiFi certified, but it seems to happen with both cables I normally use to charge it, and the other cables that work on my iPhone and older Macbook don't work at all. Maybe both are malfunctioning and the iPad is picky about newer, higher capacity cables?

USB-C connectors contain active electronic components.

I've also had this issue for years now with the 2018 model Ipad Pro. Luckily my newest Ipad Pro is still charging normally. I can confirm that I just put the 2018 model on my magic keyboard and it's charging. There seems to be no rhyme or reason for it not charging. When I let it die and it sits there for a few weeks dead I can plug it in and sometimes it will all of a sudden charge. With the keyboard plugged in and the screen on it seems to be charging and then dying immediately when the apple screen comes on. I think this is a software issue with ipads that are no longer under warranty. It seems very reminiscent of when the iphones were made to operate slower as their batteries degraded.

Add me to the list with this issue. iPad pro 3rd gen 12.9". This past week the chargers that I have been using for about a year now, just stoped working with my iPad. Like others I went though a bunch of usb c chargers, both apple and others, but it was only until I plugged my chromecast charger in did it show it was receiving a charge.

I made an appointment at apple store, and they basically advised the same as others, that its out of warranty and the best they could do was to offer me the trade in value toward a new one. ~$300 or so.

I have been able to charge with my outlet extension, that has more 110 outlets but also a usb A and USB C chargers on it. I then tested with all my usb A power bricks I have, using a usb A to C cable and they all worked. sucks I have to cary around a different cable now.

The Apple charger/charging cable issue has been a monstrous and wholly unnecessary problem for at least a decade. It not uncommon for the cables to separate within weeks, and unbranded cables aren't reliable. The sad part of it is if you go to Amazon, there is an ocean of products that don't event work with, let's say an iPad Pro. The word "certified" is thrown around like candy, but is essentially meaningless, and just a marketing word designed to deceive. Over the years I have tried to find durable charging cable solutions, to no avail. I have nursed cables over the span of 2-3 years as the separate from the plug end, time-and-time again. please, for the love of God!

Those do not appear to be Apple cables. Apple USB-C cables do not have a long plastic sleeve next to the connector and the outer covering is braided. But, any cable, if regularly bent at a ninety degree angle at the connector is likely to fail. Those cables also appear to have damage on the connectors.

I have the 2nd Gen 11" Pro and had Apple Support run remote diagnostics, came back with pretty much the same response. "All looks good!" Meanwhile, I went from intermittent issues with the USB C port to it's now completely useless. Back here in the real world "He's dead, Jim." Luckily I have the Magic Keyboard so I can charge with that, but can't use any peripherals (like wired headphones).

They also told me my battery health was in the mid-80 percent range when I can tell it's lower based on how long it goes before needing a charge. And, when I look at my analytics and do the math battery health comes in around 79%.

Overall, very frustrating but completely in line with Apple's character. I normally have had great support from them, but when a problem crops up that they either don't have an answer for or affects too few people they just smile and tell you nothing's wrong.

I have a hypothesis, though, about why the port would die but still show no signs of not working during diagnostics. I'm wondering if moisture gets in, either drips in from splashing the iPad (or, from using liquid to clean the screen) or perhaps from too much humidity. So, perhaps the connections get shorted at some point that doesn't appear in diagnostics.

Regardless, as my iPad is getting long in the tooth (and the yellow border issue is getting worse on top of everything else) I'm going to replace it with a new 13" Pro. Maybe I'll get more than 4 years out the new one.

June 10.2024 Recently began having issues with 12.9 iPad Pro 5th gen iOS 17.5.1 not accepting usb-c to usb-c charging. Weirdly though I was able to charge using usb to usb-c. In fact when using a JSAUX cable which comes with an adapter on the wall plug end which converts usb-c connection to usb; using the usb-c to usb-c will not work, even after several different outlets and charging blocks tried, utilizing the add-on usb-c to usb adapter the same cable will now work??? I bought new cables, same issue, new charge block, same issue. Others have stated the issue with earlier iOS 17 versions, I only started having this issue like 2 weeks ago. First my iPad charging blip would go off again and again making me think my cable or connection was bad. I am currently able to charge only with usb to usb-c cable. I hope Apple is able to put out an update fix for this soon.

Mine was working OK for about 6 months, but has recently reverted to not charging on the C-to-C cable. This happens on the OEM charger/cable, and plenty of others I've tried.

Earlier today I thought it was merely a port issue, as I tried plugging in an A-to-C cable as suggested in this thread. It worked, and afterwards the C-to-C third-party cable worked too. The A-to-C cable was a bit tighter in the port, and I thought maybe I had some gunk/corrosion/etc hampering the contacts which was cleared out when I pulled out the A-to-C cable.

However, now the C-to-C cables no longer work, and the only way it charges is with an A-to-C cable. I am using a power adapter with a bit more oomph in the A port, I think it outputs 20W. It does seem to be charging slower though. But at least it is charging.

This to me says there is something wrong with how the port or the device is recognizing cables. Perhaps there is indeed a bad/gunked connection in the port which isn't recognizing the C-to-C cable, but the A-to-C doesn't require the poor connection area to work.

But the A-to-C cable is pretty consistent with charging when plugged in, while no C-to-C cable is working at all now. Bizarre.

mine too, I took my iPad Pro to a local repair shop as I thought it was my charging port, but they said to wait for another big update ios17….as it seems to have affected quite a lot of people….I know for certain it’s not my leads etc as hubby uses them too….also my earphone usb-c I bought no longer works and it’s a genuine Apple one, so I think there is definitely a hardware issue…..COME ON APPLE FIX IT!!!!!!!!!

My wife and I have each had iPads ever since the first one came out, and switched to the iPad Pro when that model came out. My wife had an iPad Pro 12.9-inch (4th Gen) that she used as her primary computer for the last 2 years. Recently it stopped charging. We tried various cables and wall plugs (all made for iPad). We ended up getting her a new iPad about three months ago (iPad Pro 12.9-inch gen 6). A couple of days ago, that one started not charging. If you leave the cable plugged in it will repeatedly make the connection audio sound, but not charge.

I read these posts and saw the post about trying a USB-A to USB-C. That method seems to work on the older iPad, but the new iPad still does not recognize anything being plugged into the USB-C port. This is very frustrating! Now we need to figure out who will honor the warranty (we purchased it through AT&T). We have had zero issues with our iPads until Apple switched to USB-C. Not looking forward to the iPhone switching to USB-C, but at least they have wireless charging when the USB-C port stops working.

I’m now having the same issue. Charging my iPad Air over the USB-C cable from my Anker battery worked great. Now it’ll only charge over the USB-A to USB-C cable, and thus only charges really slowly. Also, the slow charging can’t keep up when using the iPad, so basically there’s no point.

Upon further investigation, it’s definitely something broken. My wife has the exact same model iPad Air and we both have the latest iOS update, and hers charges off the Anker battery just fine.

I have the exact same issues. I can get it to Sensi USB-C to USB but if I use a USB-C to USB-C, it doesn’t even sense the cable. This is obviously a more widespread issue and Apple refuses to talk about it. It’s not the cables I’ve tried about 30 of them. It’s not the chargers. I’ve tried about 10 of those. it started happening to me a few months ago. I thought it was just a dirty port but that’s been cleaned yet. The issue still remains. I have a feeling it was a software update that took this out. I think Apple needs to be more transparent about this and forthcoming that there is obviously an issue if several hundred people are having this problem. I’m assuming it’s probably way more than that that haven’t even recorded it. so Apple… What’s the resolution?
