iPad Pro won’t charge with USB-C to USB-C cable

I saw this posted elsewhere, but the post was old and there were no real fixes offered.

My iPad Pro 11 inch has been a trooper for as long as I’ve owned it. A while ago it stopped charging if I was using a USB-C to USB-C cable. It wil charge with a USB-A to USB-C cable, although sometimes I have to flip the USB-C connector over in order for it to begin charging.

it is not the cable or the adapter, as I am able to use the USB-C to USB-C cables on other devices just fine. There is someone in the OS that is detecting what kind of cable is being used and and says “Nope.”

Has anyone had any luck with Apple figuring out a way to have it accept a USB-C to USB-C for charging? This is really annoying, as I know it isn’t the cable, power adapter, nor the connector hardware on the iPad itself.

First, USB-C cables are fully reversible - and as such, it should make no difference at all to functioning if the connecting plug is reversed. If flipping the plug orientation makes a difference, either the cable or its connector are defective, or the mating device connector has been damaged.

Per your description, the USB-C connector on your iPad may have been damaged, or has an associated fault.

Troubleshooting generally requires substitution of the Power Adapter and cable for another known-good item. Most models of iPad require a Power Adapter rated at 12W or greater to reliably charge. 5W Power Adapters intended for older models of iPhone are inadequate to charge an iPad; if the iPad charges at all, charging will be very slow. Recent models of iPad are supplied with a 20W USB-C Power Adapter.

Be aware that many computer USB ports cannot source sufficient power to charge an iPad. Unless explicitly designed for charging connected devices, computer USB ports are typically limited to 0.5-1A @5V (i.e., 2.5-5.0W).

If you continue to experience difficulties when using an appropriate Power Adapter of 12W or greater, you might be best advised to seek assistance directly from from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively, if you have access to another Apple device, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

I'm having a similar problem. Just got my new iPad pro 11 and I'm having to reset my iPad every two days to fix the problem. For some reason it wont detect the charge after plugin it in, my mac wont detect the ipad either. If i reset the ipad, then it will start to work only for a day or 2 and then the problem repeats. Only by resetting the ipad does it detect the charge. I try resetting all settings and even doing a clean software update. But nothing. If problem persists, I might have to send it to apple. This is a brand new iPad. This issue came right out of the box. Might this be a problem with ipados 17?? anyone having this same issues? I haven't checked to see if charging from usb-a to c fixes the problem.

I have the same issue on a 2021 iPad Pro 12.9. Sometimes it will just stop charging and a reboot will fix the issue short term. This started happening around Aug 2023.

I was just going to trade my iPad in on another one (which seems like a waste of money), which I really don’ want too, since the Pro models will probably be updated in the Spring and was going to upgrade. But, I use my iPad all the time and for work, so don’t want to be without it. Plus, if it totally stops and then Apple may not take on trade in.

My iPad Pro 4th gen is starting to have charging issues. The battery seems to be okay at 74% of original capacity but I have to plug in the charging cable a number of times before it'll work. I've checked for dust/debris which would make sense but don't see any and there isn't much room in the USB-C port to clean it. I've tried about 7 different cables and chargers (from Apple, Anker and Belkin) I have...including an older 12W, a couple of 20W and 30W chargers, and even a 96W charger for my Macbook. Finally got one to work after flipping the USB-C charger back and forth a couple of times.

Regarding LotusPilot's response, it doesn't make sense that flipping the way the cable is inserted would make a difference in its ability to charge, and I'm only using OEM or cables sold as MiFi certified, but it seems to happen with both cables I normally use to charge it, and the other cables that work on my iPhone and older Macbook don't work at all. Maybe both are malfunctioning and the iPad is picky about newer, higher capacity cables?

Same issue here with ipad pro no longer charging with usb-c. I have tried all the suggestions, usb-a, reboot, restart, different cables, chargers, etc... The ipad recognizes a charger is connected but will not charge. This is obviously a hardware issue. I was told at the genius bar that my warranty has expired and i could buy another one from them for a reduced price. With the amount of usb-c failures being reported Apple should address the issue.

The same for me as well. I have a 5th gen M1 iPad Pro 12.9.

Over the last couple of months, I have had a 50/50 chance of properly charging my device.

(5 different “quality” usb-C cables and 2 different chargers)

Strangely, the usb-C coming from a dedicated output from my PC, seems to work fine.

I don’t feel I connect and disconnect my device any more than the average user, and I have regularly looked into the charging port with my eye loupes and good illumination. All inside appears to be clean and intact.

I force reset the pad on occasion, to alleviate the issue, to no avail.

I too, noticed it began within a few months of my warranty expiring.

Are there enough of us experiencing this issue to get Apple’s attention?

I wish all of you a speedy solution to this issue,

Harry

The Apple charger/charging cable issue has been a monstrous and wholly unnecessary problem for at least a decade. It not uncommon for the cables to separate within weeks, and unbranded cables aren't reliable.

Your "triaged" cables do not look good.

Fractured or damaged cables should always be replaced. Short-circuiting cables can cause severe or irreparable damage to both the device to which they are connected, and the Power Source that is charging the device. In extremis, damaged cables can be fire hazard.

Speaking of personal experience, in 14-years of Apple portable device ownership, I've never had an Apple charging/data cable fail. That said, I do take care to ensure that:

a) connectors are never disconnected from a device by pulling on the cable - instead always by the holding the plug itself.

b) cables are never allowed to hang from the connector under their own weight - as illustrated in your photo.

c) cables are always gently coiled when not in use, avoiding kinks, being mindful of minimum bend radii.

Properly used and cared for, good quality OEM cables can be expected to last for many years.

Be aware that adding heat-shrink sleeves can be counter productive.

Using heat-shrink sleeving (as illustrated) removes flexibility within the cable and transfers stress to the ends of the stiffened section - such as the plug/cable interface. This increases the likelihood of cable damage.

Also, while perhaps counterintuitive, using lighter-gauge and more flexible cables will reduce the possibility of damage to your iPad - as less stress is placed on the plug when connected to the iPad. Cables are relatively cheap to replace, unlike the USB-C port of the iPad itself.

As for cables with right-angle (side entry) USB-C connectors, some are available. Take a look at UGREEN USB-C cables.

Just started having the same issue. iPad Pro 12.9 2018.

Tried several Apple USB-C chargers. Even tried my MacBook Pro charger.

All USB-C to USB-C cables from those chargers fail to charge the iPad.

If I use a USB-A to USB-C on a lower wattage Apple charger it charges fine (sometimes have to flip the USB-C over).

Glad I saw this thread as I was going mad.

It would be nice to se a proper fix.
