iPad Pro won’t charge with USB-C to USB-C cable

I saw this posted elsewhere, but the post was old and there were no real fixes offered.

My iPad Pro 11 inch has been a trooper for as long as I’ve owned it. A while ago it stopped charging if I was using a USB-C to USB-C cable. It wil charge with a USB-A to USB-C cable, although sometimes I have to flip the USB-C connector over in order for it to begin charging.

it is not the cable or the adapter, as I am able to use the USB-C to USB-C cables on other devices just fine. There is someone in the OS that is detecting what kind of cable is being used and and says “Nope.”

Has anyone had any luck with Apple figuring out a way to have it accept a USB-C to USB-C for charging? This is really annoying, as I know it isn’t the cable, power adapter, nor the connector hardware on the iPad itself.

First, USB-C cables are fully reversible - and as such, it should make no difference at all to functioning if the connecting plug is reversed. If flipping the plug orientation makes a difference, either the cable or its connector are defective, or the mating device connector has been damaged.

Per your description, the USB-C connector on your iPad may have been damaged, or has an associated fault.

Troubleshooting generally requires substitution of the Power Adapter and cable for another known-good item. Most models of iPad require a Power Adapter rated at 12W or greater to reliably charge. 5W Power Adapters intended for older models of iPhone are inadequate to charge an iPad; if the iPad charges at all, charging will be very slow. Recent models of iPad are supplied with a 20W USB-C Power Adapter.

Be aware that many computer USB ports cannot source sufficient power to charge an iPad. Unless explicitly designed for charging connected devices, computer USB ports are typically limited to 0.5-1A @5V (i.e., 2.5-5.0W).

If you continue to experience difficulties when using an appropriate Power Adapter of 12W or greater, you might be best advised to seek assistance directly from from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively, if you have access to another Apple device, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

If you read my original post I was able to determine that the neither the cable, the adapter, nor the connector on the iPad are not working correctly, as the iPad charges with a USB-A to USB-C connector just fine, and I am able to charge other devices with both the power adapter and the USB-C to USB-C cable. Other power adapters with the same or different cables produce the same result - it does not charge.

The behavior is limited to trying to charge with ANY USB-C to USB-C cable or cable adapter combination.

I’ve been dealing with the same issue for almost a year now. Im so glad you’ve presented a recent post addressing the issue. I have to use a USB-A to USB-C adapter and it only works if I flip it on a certain side. Occasionally, I’ll try a USB-C to USB-C cord and it’ll work, but if I get too excited and go to try it again, it seems to fail. Idk if this is apple’s way of getting buyers to get new products but it’s quite exhausting. it takes almost a full day to get a full charge (might be due to the size of my charging block tho). Thank you for addressing this! I hope a solution is found

Dear Apple Community, I have similar problem, my ipad pro 11 inch, model A1934, refuses to recharge using any (including the original Apple cable / charger) usb-c cable. My fault, I left my ipad outside one morning and it received 10mm of rain, 1/4 inch of rain. Luckily it had an Apple protective cover. I dried it off, used a hairdryer etc. etc. and everything functioned perfectly until it was time to recharge the ipad. Applying some pressure to the usb-c cable, the ipad sporadically accepted a charge. Silly me, i thought it was corrosion on the usb-c port and so used a light sandpaper to remove the, what i thought, corosion. Now it refuses to re-charge. I've taken the ipad to local repairers and they refuse to try and repair (seemingly the usb-c port is soldered to the motherboard). I then went to a certified Apple repairer and they were going to charge me 689 euro / 800 US$ to repair. I refused.

My questioin, finally, can i use the ipad smart connector to recharge my ipad? I would need to buy an Apple Magic Keyboard for my ipad? Will this work to recharge my ipad? Is there anything else out there using the Smart Connector which could recharge my lovely ipad? For older ipads, Logitech had an ipad stand which also used the smart connectors to recharge. Thanks in advance for you comments and suggestions. Dominick

I have the same issue where my ipad wont charge with a USB-C to USB-C charger, brand new or not. Ive tried different cables, different chargers and different power outlets in different homes. The weird thing is that a USB- C to USB-A works fine. No issues. This just happened within the last month. Not sure if an update caused the problem.

This is exactly my issue. My iPad suddenly stopped charging and so did my brand new iPhone 15 on USB-C. If I use USB-A to USB-C it works on both devices. If I connect my devices to my Mac, it doesn’t recognize them either, unless I use the USB-A cable. I have tried multiple cables and multiple chargers, all Apple products too, so it’s not a third-party issue. I rolled back to iOS 17.01 and it did not fix the problem. I’m not sure if this was related to the new iOS but it definitely started happening within the past month.

I have this same issue on an 11" iPad Pro (1st gen with USB-C)... started out of nowhere this week. Right now, I'm only able to charge the iPad using the USB-C input on the magic keyboard... which is SLOOOOW. I have not tried a USB-A to USB-C cable however the fact that this thread has gone on as long as it has with no official response is shocking to me. This iPad is 3 years old... there's no reason it should be failing.

This is correct, but not the case here, which is what makes it weird. Brand new iPhone 15, with the cable it came in and using multiple charger bricks. Sometimes it works by just rotating the cable orientation. That’s makes zero sense why that would be the case. Sometimes it doesn’t charge at all no matter the orientation. Unless I use USB-A to USB-C, which pretty much works all the time.

Agreed. Even after the 17.2 update I’m having issues with OEM cables and chargers. At times it’s a matter of unplugging and replugging the cable in (3-4 times) and other times it works when I flip the cable upside down. I’ve made sure there’s no lint or blockage in the connection, and have tried multiple connectors and chargers. Don’t understand what’s going on!

Yesterday 28 Jan 2024 my iPad pro 11 started the same problems as yours. I am on ios 15 and using the magic keyboard for the iPad. I had never problems with the battery and usually i charge it via the magic keyboard port. Now the main usb c port of the ipad is like dead as it doesn't recognize the usb mouse connected to this port , nor charging the iPad. The battery level is at 20% and can not go higher and only charged by the keyboard port.I was wondering if you find any solution as i dont know if its a battery or charger port issue ? As i see Apple wants us to buy a new or refurbished iPad. Can Apple give us a good excuse and a good answer to these problem ? Do you think that after spending so much money for a 4g 256Gb ipad , we have to trash it and buy a new one ? Its a SHAME
