VMware Horizon Client Wont Connect to a VM

Hello All,

I am having an issue with a 2018 Macbook Pro, With the newest version of Ventura and the newest version of VMware Horizon Client. When I go to connect to a VM it starts to load, gives a black screen, and disconnects.

If I connect from a Windows PC, or a MAC with the M1 or M2 chip it works with no issue. I already worked will Vmware support for a while and they believe the issue is with how Mac is handling the GPU processing. They suggest I open a ticket with MAC so here I am.

Please let me know what else I can provide to make this easier for someone to help with this issue.

Cheers,

MacBook Pro (2017 – 2020)

I was running into the same issue and is resolved with the below command:

Try running the below command in terminal and relauch the VMWare Horizon session.

defaults write com.vmware.horizon kDisableMetal YES

This is not Apple support and we open no tickets. These are user-supported public communities comprised of volunteer, international Mac users, or the support staff assigned to the Apple hosting team for these communities. Otherwise, neither Apple, nor Apple product teams are here.

Your 2018 MacBook Pro, or Windows PC can run VM guests that are compiled for Intel, but not for ARM. Apple Silicon Macs can only run VM guests specifically compiled for ARM such as Windows 11 ARM, or an ARM-based Linux distro).

Review the VMware site for any newer updates, and review the Horizon documentation for specific configuration information that you may have overlooked.

Viking,

Yes, thank you for that disclaimer. I do realize that this is a community page and not Apple product team.

I think you miss read my statement or, I did not provide enough information.

I am connecting to a school's VMware environment, I am not building and running the VMs locally. The VMs are built and run on the school's infrastructure.

I am just using the VMware Horizon Client application to connect to those VMs, (The VMs are Windows 10 and Ubuntu). My MAC, a 2018 MacPro on Ventura 13.3.1 on the Intel chip, starts to load the VM, gets a black screen then disconnects with no error. I was able to connect to a VM up until about Ventura 13.2 something. (I would not like to run an old version of the OS).

Other MACs on the M1 and M2 chips with the newest Ventura can connect to the VMs and work just fine. I have already worked with Vmware for a while and after reviewing logs they seem to think it is an Apple problem with how the Graphics are handled locally.

I am hoping someone here has had a similar problem that they solved already, or if someone needs more information before they can suggest a solution I can provide that.

Cheers,
