Apple Mails rules not working

I am changing my main email address. I have tried setting up a rule to forward all mail arriving at my old address to my new one: the process seems quite clear and unambiguous. However, it only seems to work very occasionally. Both mailboxes are set up in mail, and work fine in all other respects.

Since the user has known they are Moving their Main E-mail account away from on e-mail provider to another E-mail Provider and has known there has been a 3 Moth Grace Period before the Old Account will be closed.

Is there any specific reason that during that 3 Month Grace Period they have not Notified ALL the Important Entities in advance of this pending Change in e-mail address ?

Usually and like when I have physically move from House to House, I have contact ALL the Important Entities in Advance of the change of Address.

This same principle would apply to changing e-mail addresses

As for E-mail rules and as perviously mentioned, the rules will, at some time, become obsolete once the Old e-mail Account is Closed

Go to the online mail site for the account to be forwarded and do the forwarding there. That seems to work for me very well. Mine is for an Apple account. But I would think that other email providers would be similar.

The OP already indicated that the old account can no longer be accessed through the email provider's webmail page. The old account has been discontinued by the provider and is no longer accessible.

Thanks for this. I did do this to start with, but I can no longer access the web portal of the old email address as it was tied to my ISP, and I have dumped them as they were charging me double what my new provider is, for a better package.

I suspect that my old address will continue working into the future, but with no ISP support, and the possibility of it stopping without warning. I can continue to monitor both inboxes, but it is a bit of a pain and I was hoping to loose connectivity to a host of organisations I am no longer interested in! You can unsubscribe till the cows come home but they never forget you!

I do not know how Dumping an ISP and any of their Included Services like e-mail works elsewhere in the World.

But, here in Canada, If I dump say Bell Canada as my ISP, ALL Their Included Services are Close Down including the e-mail address my wife has been using since 2007.

FYI - That is not going to happen, as per my wife

If you dump your ISP what makes you think they will continue providing you email service?

Thanks ku4hx it’s good to know I am not the only one. Email is an old technology, so they probably don’t care about it any more. Typical of the industry as a whole.

FWIW, I do not have any issues with email rules. I don't think your issue as described has anything to do with rules. You cancelled an account and now it is not working as expected.

On the contrary, Bob. I cancelled at the end of March, and was told on more than one occasion that the old address would keep working for 3 months - ie to the end of June, and we have not got there yet. So it should be working as expected until then.

However, the problem should go away by itself eventually. I just hope no insurance etc. lapses because I never got a reminder.

Thanks everyone for the responses.

So what has that got to do with email rules? If the service stopped working it is your service provider that stopped it. You even stated that you can no longer log into the service webmail page.

It's not necessarily complacency so much as prioritization.

I'm not saying my experience relates to all users, I gave to my experience (that's why I phrased it that way) and my thoughts. To take any one person's opinion and say it applies to all other persons is a logical fallacy commonly known as Generalization.

You watch, as soon as Apple makes a wholesale change to a different email system people will complain it's not the old system. Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it.

You make it sound easy! Of course I have notified important entities: some make it easy, some particularly difficult, and I hope that I have included all that are important (and none that are not!). However, there maybe some I have overlooked (Car insurance is one that has come to light just recently) so it is useful to keep in touch with the old address for as long as possible.

To simplify that process I tried to set up a rule in Apple Mail, but it did not work after repeated attempts. So my concern was not that I was losing contact with any entity, but that I had a problem with Apple Mail. Clearly from some responses above others have also had problems with this feature, so its not just me, and I will just do without.

Thanks for your concern.
