I'm getting mail addressed to ...@suddenlinkmail.com I'd never heard of them before & its not me!

I have tried and tried to block this nasty spam that started arriving that isn't my address at all. Using the filter 'Rules' in settings on mail, I try to stop mail not addressed to me. But still it keeps coming. As the first few characters in the addresses changes each time I cannot put in the whole email address into the rules. I'm now getting truck loads of horrible spam but every rule I try has no effect! Before this, I'd never heard of this email client so don't know how it's happened. I don't find any viruses on my iMac computer and have Malwarebytes running too. Is anyone able to help me stop it? Thank you.

In your Rules, whether you are filtering “from” or “addressed to,” include only the domain names, (all the characters after the @ sign). Do not include the @ sign, nor any characters before the @ sign. Those constantly change, as you’ve discovered.

I’ve created Rules with corresponding folders for the worst offenders. My Junk mailbox is relatively clean and manageable. Only messages that SpamSieve considers Junk go there. If I see some spam sender with greatly increasing frequency, then I will add a Rule and folder in iCloud Mail.

I don’t even know how to make rules, but it also sounds like a very temporary fix (I’ll go to apple and have them teach me). My suddenlink etc are going straight to junk, but I’m getting 1000 a day and then can’t find the legit emails that sometimes land there

because i can’t stop the spam, does anyone know of a way to make sure legit emails don’t land in junk? They are in my contacts and I’ve been emailing with them for years, so not sure what else to do? I guess apple just can’t get email right? I have no problem with my gmail accounts (and ironically, those are set up for shopping etc so my personal apple email would remain junk free.. HA! ). Thank you!

Thanks Bob, I will send more feedback to them.

And to Apple:

Also, while the spam might not be their fault, their fault is having our good emails going to junk. If that didn’t happen, we could just ‘select all’ and delete our junk and the spam wouldn’t be more than a mild inconvenience :). It’s also their fault to have untrained tech support that can’t help you when you call. I learned more here today than after 45 minutes on the phone with them yesterday. They’d put me on hold and then come back and say genius things like “well, select your good emails from junk and move them to your inbox” I don’t blame the nice person on the other end of the phone who is only trying to help. I do blame Apple for wasting my time with untrained people and putting them in the position to not being able to help people

I’ll stop replying now, but a big thank you to everyone helping here!!!!

Michael,

Since creating this rule following your example suddenly I have been getting fewer and fewer junk email from Thermomix in the folder I created in my mail account. In fact in the past two days there have been none. I like your idea because it gathered all the Thermomix junk email into one folder and I could easily delete them all at once.

I was wondering if you are finding the same thing happening in your account. They seemed to have disappeared.

Interesting. I haven't received any spam from @Thermomix.com.sg since July 6. Suddenlinkmail.com spam still pouring in, but all going to the folder I created. Easy enough to empty once in a while. But, as you know, it's a cat and mouse game. I've now created rules and folders for consumerreports.com, irkaspersky.com, spreadthesign.com, and keepsakequilting.com. SpamSieve was catching the emails from those domains, but my junk mail box was starting to fill up again every day or two. So, it was time to create new rules in iCloud Mail. Meow!

Hey Michael, and the rest of the hivemind. I need additional help, pretty please!

I was a rule making fool and it helped so much for about a week, but now it’s building up again.

Emails from suddenlink are going to my special folder and not ending in the junk folder, so yay. But, for example, a new email might say from cash’app .. the next one will say from cashapp….the next one from cashappp.. etc.. But, if you click the from name in the address section (i know not to click the body of the email) it is just from some random email address, and the next email I receive will be from a different email address..

any tips on how to do a better job on making better rules. (I have about 40 now and some of the ones I’m trying to stop are still landing in junk.

For example,

I made a rule saying “any email from” cash’app goes to my the special folder I created. Another rule that says cashapp. And because those didn’t seem to be working, I created yet another one that says cash. But, because they are really not FROM cashapp, even though I don’t really know what it means, I’m also making the same rules saying ‘any email has list id containing cash app (or even just cash) .. is that what ‘list id containing’ is even for? (Meaning, it’s not the actual email address but is what is shown?) …. And fast forward, i just got another one from cash app into my junk folder.. sigh..

as you can see I know enough to try but not enough to do this correctly or efficiently..

ANY pointers would be appreciated..

for instance, how and when to use the list id option

How to handle it when you are getting so many from email address that have nothing in common with each other, aside from saying it’s from cash app etc.

(meaning, not from suddenlinkmail.com or another commonly used one)

I hope that made sense? Sorry this is so long but it’s hard to explain well without knowing exactly what I’m talking about :)

Thanks Bob!

Yes, all along, all the spam has been going to my junk folder. But…. I was getting HUNDREDS of junk a day, so it was impossible to go through to find the non-junk emails that shouldn’t have landed there.

I only created one new folder to send everything to that I’m making a rule for.

That way most of the junk lands in this new spam folder, and then I just delete it all without looking.

But, I’m still getting about 100 a day into my junk email (cash app etc). It’s still a LOT to go through to find the emails that shouldn’t have wound up in junk (like bills!). Because of the sheer volume is why I am still trying to deal with this.

(And thanks for the visual. It helps!)

Bob, (I’ll try to be more clear)

Yes, I basically, I have the same situation you do. Cashapp etc are landing unread in junk.. i have put suddenlink etc in another folder… (just one, I’m not separating them).. but unlike you, I’m still getting SO MUCH other spam that lands in junk, i can’t go through it easily.. so I’m trying to create more rules to get things like cashapp to go join suddenlink

Bob, thank you for the feedback, and also your other contributions to this thread. I believe creating Rules and Folders in iCloud Mail, as I described, is the best way of intercepting the deluge of spam, and keeping our Junk mailboxes manageable. It has certainly worked for me. My hope is that for every new post by an Apple Mail user afflicted with this über-spam, there are many more who have come across this forum and implemented this solution.

Best wishes,

Michael

BOB!

Once again, thank you for the screen shots!! They are so very helpful!! I feel like you are my personal IT guy :)

Michael, thank you so very much for explaining in more detail yesterday and how not to include the @! I have altered things in my rules and many more are now going to my special folder.

I have also noticed a ton are now from p.gilt! And I am also not getting many or any from the thermo or sudden domains any longer. I’m curious.. is this just because the spammers naturally cycle? Or did we magically do something to make them stop? I assume the former.

And yes, I have to think this is helping countless others.. if I can understand the advice from the both of you, I know ANYONE can !

Jul 29, 2023 8:40 AM in response to CarmyBeth

I am just curious how others are doing with this issue. Since making folders in mail and rules iCloud.com to catch spam email my junk mail has been manageable and spam has slowed to a trickle. Suddenlinkmail.com has disappeared as well as thermomix. For now I would call this a success. Thanks to all who helped by sharing their ideas. This is why discussions.apple.com is such a great community.

Is suddenlinkmail just the tip of the iceburg? I have for several years received junk from so many companies and individuals but even after adding their names to the blocked list , all they do is change a few digits or numbers and send their junk again.

I have used other techniques to castigate these morons and I think I have a good percentage .

if only Apple cared and made a better blocking system , we would not be having this problem in the first place .

Thanks to all of you who got this matter highlighted and that it was an international problem and got discussed openly.
