MacOS Ventura how to show dock bar on all monitors?

Hi All,

Please share knowledge how to show dock bar or launchpad on the active display workspace.

I'm on MacOS Ventura 13.4 (22F66).

In System Settings -> Desktop & Dock -> Mission Control -> Displays have separated Spaces in ON.

In System Settings -> Desktop & Dock -> Dock -> Position on Screen is LEFT.

In System Settings -> Desktop & Dock -> Dock -> Automatically hide and show the Dock is ON

I have connected external monitor. In System Settings -> Displays -> Arrange.. the monitor has menu bar on top and it is above the Built-In Display.

I'm working on both displays: external and Built-it. If my focus (mouse pointer) is on the Built-in display, Dock bar does not appear in Built-in display Space. So, I have to move mouse pointer to external display Space where Dock bar appears and when I click on an application it is opened on the external display and covers the opened application (Space) there. My intent was to start the application on the Built-it but there is no Dock bar there?!

When I'm working on Built-in display Space and press Cmd+Shift+3, external display Space screenshot is taken but not Built-in display Space?!

The same is with Launchpad. When I'm working on Built-in display Space and pick with thumb and 3 fingers the Launchpad appears not on the Built-in display but on the External display and covers my application (Space) there.

Please share information what I have to configure to start applications by Dock bar (or Launchpad) on the active Display Space where I'm working (means, where is my mouse pointer).

Thank you!

AFAICT, no, it's not possible. You can Apple know of your wishes by using feedback:

https://www.apple.com/feedback

When I click the menu bar on the display I want and then press Cmd+Space and start an application from the Spotlight, the application is opened on the monitor it was previously closed. How to change this behaviour. I want application to be opened on the display where I clicked the menu bar?

Did you actually QUIT the application, or did you just close its window(s)?

Is the application in question set to "None", when you control-click the Dock icon, Options?

Ок. Thank you Luis!

Looks like Cmd+Space and start an application from the Spotlight only opens Apple applications (eg. Safari, Notes, Calendar , etc.) in the active Desktop when the application Dock options is None (see comments above). For the non Apple applications, such as Visual Studio Code, JetBrains IntelliJ the application is opened in the Space where it was closed.

Looks like very close to the best answer for the question is

no, it's not possible. You can Apple know of your wishes by using feedback:

Product Feedback - Apple

from your previous comment.

Summary

=======

  1. To show dock bar on all monitors, when it is not positioned at the bottom we should provide product feedback to Apple for MacOS.
  2. If you are working with multiple monitors (a.k.a Displays), to take screenshot of the active (where you are working with the mouse pointer) Space (Desktop) with Cmd+Shift+3 we should provide product feedback to Apple for MacOS.
  3. If you are working with multiple monitors and on the active display you pick with thumb and 3 fingers the Launchpad appears not on the active display (where is your mouse pointer) but on the display you pointed as Main display in System settings -> Displays. If you want to changed this, then you should provide product feedback to Apple for MacOS.

Affected MacOS versions are at least Ventura and Monterey

Where is the Dock positioned? Right, Left or Bottom? The Dock only appears on different displays when positioned at the bottom - which I imagine is not a very convenient place for your display arrangement.

My advice is to rely less on the Dock.

Make sure that the application is not set to open in a specific desktop. Click and hold the Dock icon and from Options choose None.

Click the menu bar on the display you want. Use the keyboard: Command-Space to open Spotlight and type the first few letters and press enter.

For example Command-Space Saf enter

and you have Safari starting on the selected display. No mouse traveling to the Dock necessary.

I now tested a few non-Apple applications to see how they are affected.

My take away is that they do not all behave equally; furthermore, it seems to be related to how some applications open an empty window by default, or whether they had open windows the last time they were quit, and are set to reopen them. Any of the two cases can "undermine" the intention to open them in a different display.

A case in point: I opened Smultron 8 (a text editor), and it was only opening in the very last display it had been used; but once I closed the "Untitled" window that had been automatically opened, the next time I was able to get it to open in the desired display.

Zoom, on the other hand, since there are no windows to reuse from the previous session, always opens in the active desktop.

The same thing happened with the other applications I tried: HandBrake, VLC, TeXShop.

They all open where I "tell them to", unless there were open windows from the previous session - these windows open where they were. This is why you are seeing applications like Visual Studio Code always open in the previously used display.
