How do I remove my personal email as my notification address?

I'm currently trying to change the email address associated with my AppleID (from University to personal email address), but when I enter my personal address, I see the message, "Your new AppleID cannot be the same as your notification email address."

What is a notification email address? How do I change it? Or how do I remove my personal email as my notification address?

When I go to remove the notification email address I get this “"Continue on one of your devices

On an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch go to Settings > Apple ID. On a Mac go to System Preferences or System Settings > Apple ID." And when I go to settings>Apple ID there is nothing there to do….. broken process/bug it seems to be or very unfriendly error message (if it is supposed to be an error message)

I had the problem solved with the help of a senior IT guy form Apple. He explained that if you are logging in form a device that uses face ID or finger print, it will not work. This is due to restrictions intentionally set by Apple for our protection. This is why I kept encountering this exact message and issuje. A solution that worked was to log in, inputting the password manually, from a desktop browser. Hope this helps!

Hi wingus,

The notification email is an additional email address that you have added to your Apple account to receive notifications. Log in on the Apple ID website and look for your personal email address listed under "Sign-In and Security" and "Personal Information." If you see your personal email address listed anywhere, you'll need to remove that email address to use is as your primary email.

Once you've removed it, this article will help you change your Apple ID email address:

Kindest Regards.
