When I try to open a Library file I get the pop-up message:
"The operation couldn't be completed. Permission denied."
See attached screenshot. This is an external drive I've used before, no issues. There is no other version of the Library on the drive or on my MacBook Pro. I've got read/write permission on the drive itself.
I'm wondering what this might be ... ??

Duh! S'cuse me guys. Yes. NTSF formatted drive! I updated my NTFS for Mac (great app). And now I can work with that drive as if it were a Mac formatted drive.
Opened the Library easily, updated it for the new FCP. Running beautifully.
I will remember to move all data from the NTSF to an actual Mac formatted drive ... so this problem doesn't show up again in a year. But I think I will remember this phenomena. The clue is the Finder window not functioning normally. And then me actually looking to see how the drive is formatted.

I can't guarantee that this will work, but inside each bundle there are hidden "lock files".
It seems that some of these files being corrupted or in an inconsistent state could play in this.
Quit FCP if it is running.
In the Finder, control-click, Show Package Contents.
Press Command-Shift-period to show hidden files.
Drag .lock, .lock-info and .lock-dir out of the bundle.
Close it and try to open it now.
Ha ha ha. ****. Now how did that happen!? And how come I didn't even notice.
I'm collaborating with a bunch of engineer scientists who are all running PC. My MacBook Pro is set up to also run PC files (NTFS for Mac). An app I can't remember updating recently.
I'm going to check that NTFS for Mac is up to date. I've already got a transfer going to copy the whole drive onto a RAID system (properly formatted). Aie yie yie!! I hate USB-3. This is an ?? 17 hour transfer. Shutting it down.
I'm going to check out NTFS for Mac. Because I remember working with this material back in 22. But I'm going to move it to a properly formatted drive in the night tonight regardless.
Will report back once I've checked out my NTFS for Mac ... which may, updated, be a temporary solution.

Does the application have full disk access in Privacy & Security System Settings?
Is the drive set ride/write for everybody, or ignore permissions on this drive?
Is there another volume with the same user that has accessed the files on the drive?
Did you try rebooting into Safe mode?
Sounds like the drive was accessed by the same user from a different system and the permissions are linked to that other user bengedlow.
Your drive is formatted as NTFS!!! That is not going to work with FCP.
Two things to try:
Apologies I meant to write Permissions.
Change staff and everyone to Read & Write for the drive.
It won't let me do that Tom. I tried. Somehow it's locked. I think Luis has it, picking up on the NTFS drive.

Yes.

It is read/write for me alone (my name). But won't let me change the permissions for 'staff' and 'everyone' -- pop-up says I don't have permission. There is no choice for 'ignore permissions on this drive'.

Not quite sure where one finds the 'Preferences' for the drive itself. Here are screenshots of the Finder Settings and the Info of the drive and the Info of the Library.
Hey, I notice that the Info says 'You can only read' in the Sharing & Permissions. But just below it says I –bengedlow (Me) - can Read & Write. That's a bit of a mixed message.
Are you meaning some other kind of Preferences? Steer me ...

Looking at the pop-up I have no idea what 'macbook-pro-2.local' might mean.
It could be that the last time I accessed this drive was with a previous laptop ... but I'm pretty sure the last time I opened this file was on this laptop. And it was working fine then.
What would you suggest. I have a previous laptop here. I'm not sure the new FCP will run on it.
But at least I can fire it up and see if it will open the file ... aha ... right ... I think it will still have a working FCP on it, and if I did in fact last open this drive on that system, it will be opening into whatever version of FCP it had previously been opened in.
