An AirTag must be within about 10 m of an iPhone - which itself must have internet connectivity - in order to relay location to the FindMy network.

Plus, tags only transmit their beacon signal intermittently (several times an hour).

So your’s is a really poor application of AirTag technology; which will probably never work the way you’d like.

Additionally, the tag will “sound” incessantly when your cat moves anytime your device is not nearby; adding to any existing neurosis the cat might already have.

Lastly, Apple recommends that AirTags NOT be used for pet tracking.

Although folks try using these AirTags for tracking their pets, they are not really designed to work in that fashion. @Chattanoogan already provided you with an excellent reply, but I just wanted to a bit that may help explain why they are not good for this.

Here are a few reasons why I wouldn't use them for my pets:

  • When an AirTag is separated from its associated iPhone, it will start beeping after a period of time. Most pets may find this irritating.
  • If you have them trained your pet, using a "shock" collar, they may associate the beep with those types of collars' "first warning" beep.
  • The AirTag relies on using Bluetooth. Either your phone or another person with an iPhone must be nearby to be able to locate the tag with the Find My app.

If you really want to keep track of your cats, you may want to consider getting a dedicated tracking collar that employs GPS, not Bluetooth. These basically have an unlimited range. They have these (not Apple) for both dogs and cats.
