Air tags NOT helping locate luggage…

I constantly am hearing how great Air Tags are for tracking luggage but find mine useless for checked baggage. On occasions where I really needed them - ensuring baggage got transferred during change of planes at AMS, all I ended up getting was that the Air Tag correctly showed the suitcase at the gate where we landed…and ZERO subsequent movement. Luckily, the suitcase was in fact right below my feet in the plane heading to home airport of MSP.

So, is the “value” when a piece of luggage has in fact been left behind or somehow went way off track that within, what, days, would show up somewhere?

So, far, NOT impressed…well, except when all my stuff is safely right with me, it consistently reports “with you”…a minor comfort.

Unlike GPS tracking devices, an AirTag relies on Bluetooth to send its current location to the Apple servers, and then, on to your iPhone's Find My app.

To be successful, when it is in transit, it would then rely on nearby iPhones, where their respective owners have enabled "Find My Network" on those phones. Of course, those same phones would need to have access to the Internet ... which is not always the case since most airlines charge you for that "privilege."

Finally, with your luggage in the cargo hold, it may be difficult, if not impossible for the AirTags Bluetooth signal to reach the passenger compartment.

If you really want to be able to track your luggage throughout their journey, you will need to consider getting a dedicated GPS tracking device for that purpose.

There are 50 passengers on the small Embraer Aircraft on United Express and at least 25 passengers with an iPhone spread across the plane. I saw my Bags being loaded in the Aircraft yet Find My shows them 0.1 mile away at the check-in counter for the last 45 mins. Now on the runway and still showing at the check-in counter. Which Bluetooth phone is the AirTag talking to, to ping forward? None!!!! Doubt it is a GPS device needed issue.
