when I delete a mail instead of going to next mail down it automatically defaults to the last email I looked at, at the very top of messages. Also having problem refreshing to see current messages, please help.

We do not know which MacBook model you have, or which MacOS version is installed in order to help.

Am proceeding as if you have MacOS Ventura installed:

else please choose your MacOS at the top of each article, to view accurate info.

eg: "System Preferences" (older MacOS versions) instead of "Settings" (Ventura).

says:

"Check for new messages

Choose how often you want Mail to get new messages from the Mail server.

By default, the option is set to Automatically (the frequency of checking for new messages varies based on whether your Mac is plugged into a power point).

If you change the option to Manually, click the Get Mail button  in the Mail toolbar to check for messages. (Whenever you click an IMAP or Exchange Mailbox in the Mail sidebar, it syncs with the server and shows new messages.)"

Re 2: mail defaults to last message I viewed each time I delete a message

To make changes: choose Mail > Settings, then click Viewing.

See: "Show most recent message at the top.

Display the most recent message in a conversation first in the preview area.

If the tick box is unselected, the oldest message appears first.

Re 3: how to delete in numbers instead of one at a time :

For emails that are listed one after the other:

You can try this: click on an email to hightlight it

Hold down the shift key and click a second (or more) email(s) to highlight it as well.

(Or for a greater number of eMails, just click the bottom one to highlight all between)

Press "delete" on the keyboard.

Delete emails in Mail on Mac - Apple Support

says:

"Delete multiple emails

1. 1. 1. In the Mail app  on your Mac, select messages or email conversations in the list.
      2. All of the messages in a conversation will be deleted.
      3. Click the Delete button  in the Mail toolbar or press the Delete key.

If you delete a mailbox, all of the messages in the mailbox are deleted.

You can search for a set of messages to delete. For example, you can search for messages dated 1 August to 5 September 2021 by entering “date:01/8/21-05/9/21” in the Mail search field. Or, search for messages from a specific person by entering a name in the search field. Then select and delete the found messages"
