How to do the old "Save as..." these days

"Save as..." is gone from, eg, TextEdit, and I miss it.

What's the easiest workaround these days? There doesn't seem to be a single step to save the current edits with a specific new name. I don't want to duplicate the old version, rename old version, or move it to somewhere. Thanks.

To add to Barney’s reply: if you assign to Save As… the traditional shortcut, Command-Shift-S, it will have a favorable side effect of it reappearing in the File menu. This is something that I have done in all my macs since Save As… was reintroduced in Mountain Lion.

(A bit of history: Apple removed Save As… completely in Lion, but, by popular demand, reintroduced it in Mountain Lion, albeit partially hidden, requiring the Option key to even appear; but adding the shortcut as above brings it back)

Simply duplicate it. I know you said you don't want to duplicate it? Why not? As duplicating - and assigning a new new name is same as using save as - with old file name and new file name. I do this with all my pages and numbers files when I want to save a file at a certain point to keep. often for protection so not too much is lost.

Or to alter a quote or invoice for a similar job. Keep old, make new client file name with old information, simple.

It is also the same number of steps -1 - it is just at beginning of edit, not at end. This is simple to create 2 similar files of work progression. and command S, save new current changes as you do your work to the new file name.

It is also best for photo alteration also, as I saw a previous post about auto save, when save as removed and he lost old file. Duplicate it first, add new name, eg: photonameV2, then make changes, this way you always have original file to go back to anytime you want.

FWIW, there is already a keyboard shortcut for Save As…
command option shift s

True, but some of us had used Command-Shift-S as the standard for "Save As..." for about 25 years when Apple decided to nix it in Mac OS X Lion.

I set the shortcut back as Command-Shift-S the moment Mountain Lion was installed on my Mac.

Two positive side effects of that:

1) Save As... again shows in the File menu without a modifier

2) Command-Option-Shift-S automatically was assigned to Duplicate
