Importing old iTunes library to work with Music app does not work.

I have tried many times many ways to migrate my old iTunes library from an older MacBook running Mojave to one that is running Monterey. It simply does not work. I used the method of holding down option while opening the Music app and selecting the .itl file of the old library which lies inside the old iTunes folder which I've copied to the local drive. It them prompts to save a new library in a folder named ~/Music 2. I click Save, the main Music window opens, but there is no content. No processes are spawned, no files are copied. Just the blank window. The computer just sits idle at this point. I'm pretty stumped.

It's pretty annoying that I have to do this at all since all I want to do is move music files from Beatport.com directly into my iPad. God forbid we are ever allowed to do that. Amazing that it still requires a Mac to put your own music files on an iPad or iPhone.

Hello Handyisland,

These steps from Move your iTunes library to another computer - Apple Support should help you move your library:

Move your iTunes library to another computer
If you get a new computer, you can transfer your iTunes library by connecting computers or by using iPodor a portable drive. See the Apple Support article Back up and restore your iTunes library on your PC.

Consolidate your files in the iTunes folder
You can consolidate all the files in your library in the iTunes folder to make it easier to move your library to a new computer.
1. In the iTunes app  on your PC, choose File > Library > Organize Library.
2. Select “Consolidate files.”
Files remain in their original locations, and copies are placed in the iTunes folder.

Back up your library and media files
Important: It’s highly recommended that you create a backup of your library.
By default, the iTunes Media folder is stored in your iTunes folder:
[User folder]\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media
1. In the iTunes app  on your PC, choose Edit > Preferences, then click Advanced.
2. Note the location of your iTunes Media folder in the “iTunes Media folder location” section.
3. Quit iTunes.
4. Navigate to your iTunes folder in File Explorer.
5. Drag the iTunes folder from its location to an external drive.

Restore from a backup
You can restore your iTunes library from your external drive to a computer. If you’re restoring an iTunes library from a different computer, make sure your new computer has the latest version of iTunes.
1. In the iTunes app  on your PC, choose File > Exit.
2. Locate your external drive (in File Explorer), then drag the iTunes folder you backed up earlier from your external drive to your internal drive.
Important: It’s highly recommended that you put the iTunes folder back in [User folder]\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media.
3. Hold down the Shift key while you open iTunes (go to Start, then choose iTunes > iTunes).
4. Click Choose Library.
5. Choose the iTunes folder that you dragged to your computer in step 2, click Open, then choose the iTunes Library.itl file inside.

Have a good day.

Hi there.

Monterey has a problem converting .itl files. One workaround is to import an XML file generated on the old computer, but that resets all date added values. An alternative approach is to convert the .itl to the new .musclibrary format using Catalina or Big Sur. All that is needed is the file, not the media. If you don't have access to either, or a friend that might help, then you can email the .itl or a link to it to me and I can convert if for you on my old Mac mini running Catalina. You can find my email address in my profile here if you'd like me to try to help. I'm up to about 50 of these so far.
