Hello Elmerdog1,

  1. Open Settings
  2. Scroll down and tap on Messages
  3. Scroll down and tap on Keep Messages (under Message History)
  4. Tap on Forever

Unfortunately, you will not be able to recover the messages that have already been deleted. They would be in previous backups (if they exist) and you want to revert.

Getting Messages to Stay:

A. Sync through iCloud:

If you were to sync Messages with your Mac, they’ll stay on the Messages app your Mac until they are deleted. On the the iPhone and the Mac, enable Messages in  iCloud.

On both Devoces:

  1. Go to: Settings
  2. Tap: Your Name (Top Item)
  3. Tap: iCloud
  4. Select: Show All... button
  5. Tap: Messages (so that it is green)

Another Option…

B. Keep a Clean Record of your Messages:
