Malfunctioning dock icons on Macbook Air M2 2022

When I click on several of the icons, they bring up the wrong app. A second click gets me to where I want to go.

Example: I click on Safari icon and Desktop shows up. Click again, Safari.

It's random and unpredictable.

Any thoughts or help?

Hello essemfs,

I understand that you're experiencing an issue with the dock icons on your MacBook Air M2 2022. When you click on certain icons, they bring up the wrong app, but a second click takes you to the correct app. I can see how this can be frustrating. Let's try a few troubleshooting steps to address this problem:

1. Restart your MacBook Air: A simple restart can often resolve various software-related issues. Go to the Apple menu and choose "Restart" to reboot your MacBook Air. After it restarts, check if the dock icons function correctly.

2. Remove and re-add affected icons to the dock: You can try removing the affected icons from the dock and then adding them back. Here's how to do it:

a. Click and hold on the icon that's causing the problem.

b. Drag the icon out of the dock and release it to remove it.

c. Open Finder, go to the Applications folder, and find the app associated with the icon you removed.

d. Drag the app icon from the Applications folder to the dock to add it back.

e. Repeat these steps for any other affected icons.

3. Reset the dock to its default settings: You can try resetting the dock to its default settings, which can sometimes resolve unusual behavior. Here's how to do it:

a. Open Terminal from the Applications > Utilities folder.

b. In the Terminal window, enter the following command and press Enter: `defaults delete com.apple.dock; killall Dock`

c. Wait for the dock to restart and see if the issue persists.

4. Check for software updates: Ensure that your MacBook Air is running the latest version of macOS and that all apps are up to date. Go to the Apple menu, select "System Preferences," and click on "Software Update." Install any available updates and check if the issue is resolved.

If the issue persists after trying the above steps, it's possible that there might be a deeper software or compatibility issue. In such cases, it can be helpful to contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Store for further assistance. They can provide more advanced troubleshooting steps or recommend specific actions based on your MacBook Air model and software version.

I hope one of these steps helps resolve the issue with your dock icons. If you have any further questions or need additional assistance, feel free to ask.

Is magnification on the dock? This could cause the Dock to resize moments before you hover over it, bringing another app into focus when you click on it. If it is, try turning off magnification, and even group some shortcuts together in a folder, and dragging the folder next to the trash can. You can launch those programs from the Dock while at the same time be able to see and access all the applications easily. It can be really problematic when you have too many icons on the dock for the screen size.

I kept track of the malfunction over a day. Here's a list of the apps where I press and they go to the wrong destination.
