How do I deactivate Junk Mail filtering using iCloud?

I've been told how to change my Junk Mail settings using the Mail app on a Mac, but I need to do this using iCloud or an iPad, iPhone, or a windows computer. Surely my email settings are not blocked by only having this Apple hardware but not that Apple hardware... any help? Thanks!

I have exactly the same problem. I know how to turn off junk mail filtering on my end, but how do I turn it off at Apple? I use an email account on iCloud.com. I can't figure out what kind of algorithm they use to determine 'junk mail'. Seemingly there is none...I'll get junk email from a send one time and it will go to my inbox the next. I just want to turn off ALL junk mail filtering...I can make that decision and delete quickly enough. Please help Apple.

Honestly, despite how many times you get told to change your junk mail setting on a Mac, it doesn't have any effect outside of the Mail app. Apple seems to have its own mail filtering at the iCloud level that we have no control over. (seriously, turn off junk mail filtering on the Mail app on a Mac and watch emails still go to the junk folder)

This is really frustrating since there are mail clients out there with great junk filter options that can even delete them before they get to you, but this only affects your inbox. The same goes for Apple's own Mail app, there is an option to delete emails that you've already blocked but the same thing, it only applies to what hits your inbox, so when Apple takes the liberty to have already decide what was junk, you're left with having to constantly sift through your junk mail folder since.

I have the same problem on the mail program on my Macbook, and it drives me absolutely nuts. I have junk mail filtering turned off but it makes no difference. The problem is that there is no way to mark emails as 'not junk' like there used to be in the dim and distant past, and it just keeps on doing it anyway, whatever you do. Apple have a lot of REALLY annoying behaviors (mostly centered around sign-in and ID verification), but this is by far the most annoying. It's like they don't give a monkey's what the customer wants but are determined to continue along a set path for their own obscure reasons. I have recently started to work for a new agency (I am a translator), and my mail program consistently sends all my emails from them to the junk folder. Despite the fact that I assiduously move all of them to the inbox it seems that I cannot 'teach' it not to do it, and it does not 'learn' from the fact that I keep re-filing them that they are not junk. The worst aspect by far of the whole thing is that emails marked as junk on my computer do not appear on my phone - the computer 'hijacks' them, as it were, and they simply never appear. So if I am away from home I risk losing work - I recently lost about $1000 worth directly as a consequence of this, and I REALLY feel like invoicing Apple for it...

Thank you, but I'm not asking about rules.

I'm asking about junk mail filtering, settings such as: enable/disable junk mail filtering, what to do when junk email arrives, setting exemptions from junk mail filtering, and so on. Those are settings easily reached on Mac's Mail app, but how do we manage those settings on other i-platforms?

Hello Spazticus,

We can help with information about junk mail for iPhone and iPad here to help answer the question: Report and reduce spam in iCloud Mail - Apple Support

"Report junk mail

To make sure future messages from the same sender are marked as junk, you can report messages as junk in the Mail app.

  • On your iPhone or iPad, swipe left on the message, tap More, then tap Move to Junk.

Mark legitimate emails as not junk

Filtering out junk mail can block a legitimate email from reaching your inbox.

If you feel that a legitimate email message was accidentally filtered, you can mark it as not junk so that any future messages from the same sender go to your inbox:

  • On your iPhone or iPad, open the message in the Junk folder, tap the Move to Folder button  at the bottom of the screen, then tap Inbox to move the message.

Reduce future spam

To help reduce the amount of spam you receive in the future, you can use the techniques below.

Don't open suspected junk email

Delete any messages that look like junk mail before you open them. Learn how to delete emails on your iPhone or iPad and how to delete emails on your Mac. You can also manage junk mail on iCloud.com.

When you open an email that looks like junk mail, it can alert spammers that their message was received and opened from an active email account.

Adjust your Mail Privacy Protection settings

Spammers use the email image-loading feature to determine whether your email account is active. Here's how to keep images from loading automatically:

On your iPhone or iPad

  1. Go to Settings > Mail > Privacy Protection.
  2. Turn on Protect Mail Activity.

Learn more about Mail Privacy Protection on iPhone"

We hope this helps.

Cheers!

Hey there Spazticus,

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities.

If using an iCloud email, you can find steps on how to change your iCloud Mail filter settings and manage junk mail from iCloud.com at these links here: Set up rules to filter email in Mail on iCloud.com - Apple Support

Set up rules to filter email
1. In Mail on iCloud.com, click the Settings button at the top of the Mailboxes list, then choose Preferences.
2. Click Rules, then click “Add rule.”
3. Below “If a message,” use the pop-up menu and text field to specify the type of messages you want to filter.
4. Below Then, use the pop-up menus or fields to specify an action for the rule.
5. Click Add.

You can have up to 500 rules.

Important: If you apply rules to a folder and then delete the folder or change its name, make sure to update the rules for those folders accordingly. For example, you can’t forward messages to a deleted folder.

Change or delete email filtering rules
1. In Mail on iCloud.com, click the Settings button at the top of the Mailboxes list, then choose Preferences.
2. Click Rules, then select a rule.
3. Do any of the following:
* Change a rule: Specify new filtering conditions in the pop-up menus and text fields, then click Done.
* Delete a rule: Click Delete.

Manage junk mail in Mail on iCloud.com - Apple Support

Mark an email as junk
1. In Mail on iCloud.com, locate the message list and select the message or messages you want to mark as junk.
2. Do one of the following:
* If you selected one message: Click the Reply, Reply All, Forward button, then click Move to Junk.
* If you selected multiple messages: Click Mark, then click “Move to Junk.”
Subsequent messages from the same sender are automatically marked as junk.

Indicate that an email isn’t junk
1. In Mail on iCloud.com, click the Junk folder in the Mailboxes list.
2. Select the message or messages, then do one of the following:
* If you selected one message: Click the Reply, Reply All, Forward button, then click Move to Inbox.
* If you selected multiple messages: Click Mark, then click “Move to Inbox.”
Subsequent messages from the same sender are no longer automatically marked as junk.

We do want you to be aware that not all iCloud.com features will be accessible on all devices, so you may need to complete these steps from an iPad or your Windows computer.

If wanting to change the junk mail settings for a third-party email account, this may need to be done from your email providers website when signed into your account.

Let us know if that's able to help.

Take care!

Hi Spazticus,

You've mentioned you want to turn off " junk mail filtering". This page has how to turn off Mail filtering on an iPad. Hopefully this answers your question.

Filter emails in Mail on iPad - Apple Support

Filter emails
1. Tap the Toggle Filtering button in the bottom-left corner of a mailbox list.
2. Note: When reading an email on iPad in Portrait orientation, tap the Show Sidebar button to display the email list with the Toggle Filtering button at the bottom.
3. Tap “Filtered by,” then select or turn on the criteria for emails you want to view.
4. Tap the Toggle Filtering button in the bottom-left corner to hide emails that don’t match the current filters. Tap again to turn the filter off.
To turn off all filters, tap the Toggle Filtering button. To turn off a specific filter, tap “Filtered by,” then deselect it.

If this direction still doesn't answer your question, then we'd advise to leave feedback for Apple about what you'd like to see as an option.

That only turns off those filters that I have created myself, but will not disable Apple's "enable junk mail filtering". I know I can disable the filters that I have created to augment what Apple's junk mail filters misses and my other organizational tasks, but that has no impact on Apple's junk mail filtering.

Are you telling me that I have no means of editing my junk mail behavior settings unless I plead with Apple to create a feature in the future (and hope for the best)? Or that I have to buy a Mac just to access that one little checkbox?
