Hi, I am trying access old photos i saved in iphoto (the old photos app) on an external hard drive. can someone please help me find these?

If you have Photos v7 or earlier then you can migrate those iPhoto Libraries to Photos simply by opening them:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch Photos. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and point at your iPhoto Library. It will do the rest.
If you have v8 of Photos then you can simply import from those Libraries to your Photos Library: File -> Import
