HomePod mini stuck in ''configuring''

I purchased a HomePod mini to use as a HomeKit hub. Went through the setup procedure and it failed to update because I had ''advanced data protection'' turned on. Turned it off and the HomePod updated from software version 15.6 to 16.5, however it's still stuck in configuring. Reset the device multiple times and it's the same thing everytime. In the home app, it says ''HomePod is being configured. Additional settings will be available shortly...''. Also alarms and timers are greyed out and it says that they can be viewed and managed only when this homepod is on the same network as this iPhone. I restarted my phone and router to no avail. Logged in to my router and I can see that the HomePod is indeed connected but it doesn't show it is in the home app (I can't see the wifi strength bars).

In this current state I can use it as a speaker and I know for a fact that it is connected to my wifi network as I see it as an audio output option on my MacBook Pro and it disappears if I turn off wifi. I asked Siri random facts and it did read the information from a wikipedia page. When I ask Siri to set an alarm or timer it says that something went wrong with my request and to try again later. I haven't tried controlling any HomeKit accessories yet because they haven't been delivered yet.

Help please!!!

See if you can reset it with your Mac. It’s called “restore” but is the same as a factory reset. Then set it up again and see how that works. If it still shows configuring, Reset or Restore it again & take a look in settings on your iPhone - Your Name - scroll down to make sure it’s not showing in the list of devices signed into your Apple ID. If it is tap on > Remove, then try setting up again. The latter is eventually what worked for mine. Being it should not be in your devices after a factory reset. It’s sort of stuck in limbo.

Reset HomePod or HomePod mini - Apple Support

Restore HomePod mini with a Mac

If you can't reset HomePod mini, you can restore it. Restoring your HomePod mini resets it and updates it to the latest software.

  1. Plug HomePod mini into your computer using the USB-C cable that came with it.
  2. Wait a few seconds. If you're using a Mac, open a Finder window. If you're using a PC, open the latest version of iTunes.
  3. Select your HomePod when it appears on your computer.
  4. Click Restore HomePod.

Update, when I moved the HomePod mini from the supplier 1 network it worked on (the 2.4GHz wifi connection ), back to the supplier 2 whose router has a combined wifi network (2.4 + 5 GHZ), it stopped working.

Eventually after multiple restarts I got it to reconnect to supplier 1, 2.4GHz, and it is working fine, so I am not touching it again until 17.3 is released!

Interestingly while I was able to move the HomePod mini from supplier 1 to supplier 2 using the home app, I could not move the HomePod mini from supplier 2 back to supplier 1 the Home app. Hence having to restart it to get this to happen (and eventually turning off the router for supplier 2, to help it move!)

I Resolved this for my specific situation.

2 new HP minis stuck on configuring. These were for a different location to my main home. I set up a new room called 'office'. neither HP Minis completed configuring, nor would form a stereo pair.

Instead, I set up a new home for my office location and Reset both HP minis. was then prompted to select a home, and chose my new home 'HQ'

Both HP minis paired, completed configuration and downloaded updates with no hesitation.

If your minis are in a different location to your main home. This maybe your issue.

I had the same problem with you and it last for two days. I tried all the methods people mentioned above and none of them worked for me, and I finally find another way that works for me: I removed all of my devices in home app and deleted home app. After that I reinstalled home again and reset both of my homepod mini, they successfullly configured in a short time.

Ok - easy peasy - original HomePod - iOS 17.1.1 - no need to switch to another country

  1. unplug for 10 seconds and plug back in.
  2. wait another 10 seconds before holding down - keep holding - Siri will tell you (in about 25 seconds) that HomePod is being reset and to wait for the 3 beebs before releasing finger.
  3. after a few minutes a pop up screen appeared on my iPad saying the HomePod is ready to configure - hit continue. Another pop up screen appears asking you to enter a 4 digit code which Siri will provide you.
  4. then it takes about 10-15 minutes to complete along with software update.
  5. I had 2 HomePods and repeated the process - on the 2nd it asked if I wanted to pair with my other HomePod - I clicked Yes.
  6. sit back and wait 10-15 minutes to complete.

I experiencing the same issue with a HomePod mini running 17.2. It was initially setup using different Apple ID, and worked fine on 2 different networks. No errors and the timers worked.

I needed to move it to my main AppleID and it’s been a mess since I did that 2 weeks ago. Get the error listed here and I can’t get it to do timers.

last night I had a little breakthrough that may help others.

I have 2 networks. One of which has the 2.4GHz option enabled.

I reset and set it up using that 2.4GHz network as suggested by someone in this discussion.

it worked as expected again, no errors, fully operational and timers worked.

so then I moved it to the main network (which has 2.4 and 5GHz combined).

And the problems returned. I can’t set timers again.

I’ll see tonight if I can get around this issue.

so if you can set it up using a 2.4GHz wifi network it might work for you and avoid changing countries etc.

(normally if you change the network on the device you are connecting the HomePod to, it will ask you if you want to change the network the HomePod is on to that network. In my case that isn’t happening now that I have moved the HomePod mini to the combined network, I can’t move it back. I assume if I reset it and just add it to the 2.4GHz network it will work - to be tested!).

Same problem, stuck in configuring limbo. I have tried 20+ times to reset. About 1/2 never got as far as resetting (no red spinning light and “about to reset” instructions). The other half reset but then got stuck in configuration for hours, days, weeks.

Only solution that has worked twice now is to create a new home in the home kit and assign the HomePod to the new home. Reset, install, configuration go seamlessly, but now that HomePod sits by itself in the new home while its 5 mini siblings, lights, Apple TV, etc., are in Home 1. No, resetting and moving to Home 1 doesn’t work.

Btw all this started as I was trying to get HomeKit to work with Phillips Hue Bridge which - after years of seamless integration - now won’t work with each other.

I replied earlier today indicating that creating a second “Home” and resetting my HomePod to reside there beat the endless configuring problem.

BUT - I spent and hour texting with an Apple person explaining my issues. One suggested I reset my network settings (at the bottom of Settings > General). Scary but I did it.

Not only did it solve my endless HomePod configuring problem but it solve my Phillips Hue Bridge problem (which had suddenly stopped working with Apple Home app).

[Updated Method] Adding HomePod to Home App Without Cancelling Subscription - Step by Step

Hey everyone! I've got an updated method for you on how to add your HomePod or HomePod mini to your Home App without canceling your subscription. Here's the step-by-step guide:

Step 1: Create a US Account

Create the US account as described previously. If you already have a back US Account use that.

See the following post: HomePod mini stuck in ''configuring'' - Apple Community

Step 2: Sign Out of Current Account

Sign out of your current account on your iPhone or Apple Device where you're setting up your Apple Home app.

Step 3: Sign Into Apple Music with US Account

Without signing into your device, sign into the Apple Music app using your US Apple account previously created.

Step 4: Do Not Subscribe to Apple Music

Do not subscribe to Apple Music service or make that account your default on your Apple device.

Step 5: Add HomePod to Apple Home App

Proceed to add the HomePod or HomePod mini to your Apple Home app. Use your default account to associate with your device.

Step 6: Use US Apple Account for Music

Apple may suggest using your US Apple Account for Music. Use your US Apple Account at this point.

Step 7: Allow HomePod Configuration

Your HomePod or HomePod mini will begin to configure. Give it time. If you can monitor device traffic, you'll see minimal traffic from your HomePod after about 5 minutes with a high bandwidth internet connection. You will actually see when your device has completed configuration on the Home App.

Step 8: Adjust HomePod Settings

Once configuration is complete, go to your HomePod settings in the Home App and change your Primary

User and HOMEPOD ACCOUNT to your default account.

Step 9: Backup via iCloud Backup (Optional)

As a precaution, you can back up your account via iCloud Backup.

Step 10: Sign Out of Store

Go to the Sign Out option of your device under Apple ID. Select Sign Out and choose to Sign Out of Store.

Step 11: Sign Back Into Default Account

Go into the Store App, select the account icon, then select "Sign in With Apple ID." Follow the prompts to sign back into your default account.

Now you're all set to control your devices within your Home App and listen to your music via the Music App. Enjoy! If you have any questions, feel free to ask. 🏠🎵

I had the same issue trying to get 2 x HomePod Gen 2 in my home which has several HomePods and HomePod minis. I was setting them both up around same time with no luck. Then I did just one and was successful. The second one was problematic no matter what I did. So I set it up and selected and different room in HomeKit. That worked like a charm and then I moved the speaker to the correct room and selected stereo pair with no issues. Hope this helps
