Hi maryfromcrossville,
We'll be happy to help with finding out what's going on with your photos. And thanks for sharing that you have not been using My Photo Stream.
A great place to start is going to be steps found in If you're missing photos or videos in the Photos app - Apple Support. We'll place them below for a quick reference, or you can click on the link for further details.
Check your Recently Deleted album
If you accidentally deleted your photo or video, it goes to the Recently Deleted album. Go to Photos > Albums, and tap Recently Deleted in the Utilities section.
On your iPhone or iPad
1. In iOS 16, iPadOS 16.1, or later, use Face ID or Touch ID to unlock your Recently Deleted album.
2. Tap a photo or video, then tap Recover. To recover multiple photos, tap Select, select your photos or videos, then tap Recover.
3. Confirm that you want to recover the photos or videos.
Unhide your photos
On your iPhone or iPad
1. In the Photos app, go to the Albums tab.
2. Tap Hidden under Utilities.
3. In iOS 16, iPadOS 16.1, or later, use Face ID or Touch ID to unlock your Hidden album.
4. Select the photo or video that you want to unhide.
5. Tap the More button, then tap Unhide.
Make sure that iCloud Photos is turned on
On your iPhone or iPad
1. Go to Settings > [your name], then tap iCloud.
2. Tap Photos.
3. Turn on iCloud Photos.
If iCloud Photos is turned on, then go to iCloud and sign in. Do you see your missing photos here?
Have you checked the iPhone Storage (not to be confused with iCloud Storage) to see if space may need to be freed up? See How to check the storage on your iPhone and iPad - Apple Support for details.
Reach back out if you still need help.
Good luck!
