Outgoing server smtp.gmail.com fail

Recently after changing my email password on Gmail (initially on my PC and then on my iPhone with iOS 16.6) I keep getting “The connection to the outgoing server smtp.gmail.com failed” message. Although I can send and receive email on my Gmail account on my PC but I can not do the same on my iPhone. My Gmail emails get stuck in Outgoing folder and never get sent. All my other email servers like Yahoo, Hotmail, AOL, etc. on my iPhone work well. I have tried multiple times to change the password to my Gmail account on my iPhone (Settings->Mail->Accounts->Gmail) and go thru the whole process and will get the successful message on my recovery email but problem still exists.

Even after successful password change, when I go to Settings->Mail->Accounts->Gmail I get “Re-enter Password” message and Mail toggle icon is dimmed.

Again, I have no problem using my Gmail account on my multiple PCs but only on my iPhone.

It is my personal iPhone and I do have multiple configuration profiles in Settings->General->VPN & Device Management but they are all related to VPNs I have used or still using for a long while. They were all installed long before my trouble with Gmail started and probably have no conflict.

I did have 2 step verification on Google but I have since disabled it.

My problem is still the same:

On my iPhone, no email is received in my Gmail in-box and all my Gmail outgoing emails get “Connection to the outgoing server smtp.gmail.com failed” error message. When I go to Settings->Mail->Accounts->Gmail it asks to “Re-enter Password” which I do and go thru entering Gmail user Id and password but nothing happens and “Re-enter Password” comes back and problem still exists. Looks like somehow the new password never gets updated on my iPhone and the old password remains intact hence the connection failure. I have no problem using my Gmail account with the new password on PC and also no problem using other email servers on my iPhone.

Help Please.

  1. Is this your corporate iPhone? Then please contact the system administrator of your corporate
  2. If it is your personal device, in that case, do you have any profile installed by your corporate/organisation/enterprise/School Management?
    1. Erase the profile added by you If you have installed a profile on your own --> Install or remove configuration profiles on iPhone - Apple ...
    2. Or please contact the system administrator of the organisation who provided the profile to you



You may have enabled two step verification on Google --> Sign in with App Passwords - Google Account Help
