How to measure speed of internet connection

My Mac Studio is connected to an ethernet cable (running to an Araknis network switch and router attached to an ISP-supplied modem) and also has an active wifi connection to our home/family network. Internet connection is unreliable. [1] How do I know (or specify) that the connection is through the ethernet path or via wifi? [2] How can I monitor the strength/speed of the internet connection so that I can tell whether problems are in my house or with the ISP?

simply visit any internet speedtest website like fast.com, speedtest.net or nettest.in

Have your ISP support staff assess the health of the connection from their head-end up to their premise device to ensure there are no issues with that network segment.

For years, I was running a DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem through household CAT-5 cable to my Apple Airport Extreme Base Station, with home devices connected via Gigabit switch and Ethernet. Speedtest.net would show a range of 70 - 120 Mbps.

Last year, I replaced the cable modem with a DOCSIS 3.1 Motorola MB8611 (2.5 GB), the Apple router with a Synology RT6600ax (2.5GB), and a Startech DS52000 2.5 GB switch. I also used CAT-7 cabling. Without changing my ISP Internet plan, the Speedtest.net now averages 260 Mbps to the same remote server when run from my M2 Mac Mini Pro with macOS Sonoma 14.4.1 and via Wi-Fi 6 to the Synology router.

Thank you, Allan. Your suggestion led me along a fruitful path to some Ethernet and Internet status apps available on the AppStore that indicate whether the connections are active or not. My connection is cycling on or off with a frequency of about a minute at the moment.
