Why can't I delete apps on my iPhone?

when I try and delete an app I tap and hold it and it only lets me “edit Home Screen” or “remove app from Home Screen” but that just means it’s in App Library and not actually deleting. I checked and deleting apps is allowed.

I’m trying to delete a third party app, and it’s the same for all of them, on my iPhone 13, IOS 16 I believe? And whenever I press and hold the app and press remove app, it only allows me to remove the app from Home Screen, and not delete the actual apps. When I go onto settings, I checked if deleted apps is allowed, and it is. I restarted my phone, and tried about everything I can think of, and I still can’t delete the app.

try, in screen time part of settings, like which apps have screen time access. For me, it was ScreenZen, which takes control over whether or not I can delete an app or not. When I removed access (need FaceID, etc) (turned the slider off), then I was able to delete apps as usual again.

Hope this helps you, but of course your situation could be different.

If I had to guess, screentime permissions is likely a culprit easy to see through.

I’m having this problem as well. My apps will not delete and the only option given when I try to remove is taking it off my Home Screen. I think the reason is because I don’t have the latest update. This is frustrating because I don’t want the new update I actually prefer the old OS. I’m tired of the constant updates and changes in the systems and the possible, if not eventual, bugs that come with.

So one time when I was trying to delete an app it said remove app from home screen so I press that and it just took me to my app library and so I went to app library and press it so I could delete it said put back on home screen so so when it did that it went back on home screen and now I’m able to delete any single apps that I have and there’s a lot that are sending bugs on my phone and I need to take them off and it won’t let me sometimes when I ask my parents for help and they try to do it on their phone. It won’t work either so I don’t have any way to delete these apps on my phone unless I restart it or buy a new one.

Hi rorrie192,

welcome to the Apple (user-to-user) Community.

Re: "My phone won’t let me delete apps even when content and restrictions say that deleting apps are allowed".

Wondering which iPhone model you are using, and which iOS version is installed, in order to try and help.

Also:

Wondering whether you are trying to delete Apple's built-in apps, or non-Apple (third-party) apps.

Eg: With iOS 14 or later, Delete built-in Apple apps from your iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch - Apple Support

says:

"Delete a built-in app from your device

On your iPhone or iPad:

    1. Touch and hold the app.
    2. Tap Remove App from the shortcut menu.
    3. Tap Delete App from the submenu".

Or for older iOS versions:

See: Delete built-in Apple apps on your iOS 12, iOS 13, or iPadOS device or Apple Watch - Apple Support

For any third-party apps that won't delete, you may want to contact their developers, they may have uninstallers.

Restarting you iPhone was a good trouble-shooting step to take.

The tips in this article may help remove the app from both Home Screen + Library:

Remove apps from iPhone - Apple Support

________________________________________

If you still can't remove the app(s):

If you do not have "automatic" set for updates, you might want to check if you have the latest update for iOS 16: About iOS 16 Updates - Apple Support says iOS 16.6

To find the software version installed on your device:

go to Settings > General, then tap About.

At any time, you can check for and install software updates:

Go to Settings > General > Software Update.

If the third-party apps still can not be deleted, you might want to try contacting their developers; they may have uninstallers for the apps:

More support If needed:

App Store Support website (info. / support / contact)

There is a "Get Support" link (online chat / phone / email etc. or use the app) at the bottom of their website: App Store - Official Apple Support

Ok, if you are having this problem try this…

Go into Setting and take a look at each one of your apps.

Sometimes when you download an app you maybe giving it permissions on your phone to mange your apps.

Mine was an App that locked certain apps after some time. It’s possible that an app you have downloaded is controlling your ability to delete things.

I was not aware of that this permission was given and would have never done it if I had known. So check all your apps before you get a new phone because a new phone may not solve the problem unfortunately. Hope this helps some of you! God speed!

  • removed from Iphone storage
  • signed out of APPLE and saw it was back in Iphone storage - deleted again from Storage
