Outgoing Apple mail not working with Spectrum

Our Spectrum service was upgraded last week -- it required a new modem to accommodate the swanky new speed.

Since then we have ceased to be able to send outgoing emails via Apple mail on our desktop Mac. Our SMTP is set up according to Spectrum guidelines as mobile.charter.net (I do not know how to check the ports), I have checked our Connection Doctor and get green lights for both POP (which is working fine) and SMTP (which apparently isn't actually working). I have authentication checked as "yes".

I am able to go to the Spectrum website and send emails from the interface on the website itself. Because of this, Spectrum chat says it's an Apple problem which coincidentally happened right when Spectrum revamped the service.

Thoughts?

Even if the connection is green, it may not be authenticating correctly through the SMTP outgoing server. Recently I noticed that they now require a secure connection with the same incoming server's credentials, and I also had to update the SMTP address. Here is the configuration for Mail at Settings... → Accounts → Server Settings (header) → Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) that worked for my POP rr email account: (create a separate outgoing mail server "account" configuration for each unique email account since some of the fields are account-specific)

  • uncheck "Automatically manage connection settings"
  • User Name: your FULL email address
  • Password: the same password as your incoming mail server from above
  • Host Name: smtp-server.??.rr.com (where ?? matches that of your email address)
  • Port: 25
  • CHECK "use TLS/SSL"
  • Authentication: Password

And don't forget to press save in the bottom right.

Typically, when you cannot send emails, via SMTP, there is something amiss with the configuration of your email client (in this case Apple Mail) to communicate with that server.

Let's double-check your SMTP email settings on your Mac.

First, use the following link to verify that you have the correct email server information for your Spectrum email service: Mail - Official Apple Support

This link will have you enter your Spectrum email address. Once you do so, it will provide you with the correct server & port settings to use in the Apple Mail app.

Once you have that information, I suggest that you delete the current Spectrum account in the Mail app, and then, try setting it up again with that information. Then test by sending an email.
