No you don't have to but it is very wise to do so.
I also would advise against downloading beta software on your every day phone.
It's feature incomplete, many apps aren't going to work (especially banking apps) and its very buggy.
When it comes to computers (your iPhone is a computer), the answer to "do I have to back up?" is always Yes. Unless you like losing stuff.

You should be backing up your phone regularly (every day is best) regardless of whether or not you plan on updating anything. You could lose your phone. Or it could get damaged.
