So I want to download an app, but it won’t let me because supposedly I need to add a payment method. I do not have a credit card or anything like that so I can’t, What do I do?? I’ve tried looking it up on google but nothing works.

You don't need to pay for free apps. However, you do need to have a valid payment method on the account. If you don't have a credit card, you can try adding an iTunes gift card.

Apple does now require a payment method on the account in order to download a free app.
If you don't want the money taken from your debit/credit card, you can always purchase an apple gift card and apply it to the apple ID acct. But remember once you're out of store credits it will then take from the credit/debit card on the acct.
How come it says that I have to enter payment information to download apps now it didn’t used to say that and I didn’t have to put in any information I need help. Can someone help me? I’m getting so frustrated.

Does it let you download apps without a payment method? Or does it give you an error? If it gives you an error message telling you that you need a payment method, then you need a payment method.

If you have any apps that have subscriptions or had a subscription in the past, or if you have any apps that offer in-app purchases, you must have a valid, working payment method.

Me too!! I have linked it to the fact that Apple charges me $5.99 a month (I have no idea what for) and when I don’t have the money to pay for it in my account it won’t charge me but then I can’t download any apps because it says I need to update my card/payment details. Even though I now have the money, it still won’t let me use my current card. If you find a solution let me know by replying!!
Why is a payment required for things that allegedly dont cost money as well as the basic operation of the phone that u own? Android doesnt seem to have an issue. In fact many of the same apps perform just fine without a payment method on the account or play store credits which could be obtained by taking surveys for free if one chooses to do so. Thank you for your in depth explanation but it fails to address the inherent unfairness of this whole system. Apple has always milked us for every cent and we shouldnt be forced out of the ecosystem because we dont want to expose our bank account balance to the whims of the appstore. I just want free apps and to upgrade my free apps. Its not a lot to ask because many computer programs are offered free of charge for personal usage. Its a common practise.
I shouldn’t have to have my card info in my App Store for a FREE app I’ve never had or WANTED to buy anything from the App Store only online shopping and I use tap pay for everything. I’m so fed up with all apples small charges (cause they add up I’ve done the math) cause now I’m NEGATIVE 200$!!!! ALL BECAUSE APPLE CHARGES THAT I CANT DISPUTE!!!!! I’m so close to switching to Samsung!!!

It took a payment for my spotify and my crunchyroll account using the debit card i have on my appstore/phone but when i try to download an app free or not it requires a payment method, when i try to put my card in it says i already have that one in my phone, but when i try to verify my card, the one on my phone, it doesn’t work it just goes back to asking for a payment method, starting a never ending loop
