My screen went black on my phone. I can barely see some of the icons on it. I have a new phone and am trying to transfer data from my old phone to my new phone but can't get the old phone to start the transfer.

If the old phone isn't working, you can't do a direct transfer.
You'll have to restore the new phone from a backup of the old one instead.
