Try running first aid in disk utilities first. Go to Finder, applications, utilities, disk utilities. Find your External HD in the left column in disk utilities. Click on the disk. Then run first aid on it from the top right.
If that doesn't fix the issue then you will need to erase it in disk utilities and make sure it's formatted properly.

Thanks. I rand the fix but it showed that the hard drive il have had for years is almost full so I will get a new one. Thanks for you time to help!!
