I was not given a passcode as a former employee at the company used the phone. i do not know the prior passcode. How can I get a new pass code and do a factory reset?

It sound like your device is remotely managed by the company using MDM software that will not allow a factory reset until the company removes the device from management.
If the device is not remotely managed, then it is possible that you have not put it into Recovery Mode properly. Try following this support article to reset the Passcode. If you are only prompted for the Passcode when putting into Recovery Mode, then you do have a phone that is managed by the company.

Unfortunately, there are no workarounds here.
You will need to contact the IT department at your company to allow you to factory reset the phone and set it up again.
