Ipad os keyboard always in compact mode when apple pencil is connected

I’ve seen this problem on another topics but since they get closed ill do my own.

Whenever im using my apple pencil my keyboard stays stuck on compact mode. I have to totally disconnect the pencil to use the full size keyboard.

And please dont: “use two fingers swipe” “restart” etc shenanigans don’t work. I’ve tried them all. So pls give me a power user answer if u can and not a pr one.

Im using the latest ipados version on an ipad pro 12” 3rd gen with a 2nd gen pencil. But I’ve seen this problem reported on ipad minis etc.

Thank you

iPad Pro

Have you enabled the Scribble feature? This feature uses a mini-keyboard that does not respond to the two-finger zoom or pinch gestures.

Settings > Apple Pencil > Scribble - set to OFF

After disabling Scribble, you may need to force-restart your iPad:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

Force restart iPad (models with the Home button)

Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.

This is it. Did I miss something? Because in the settings where’s scribble there’s no user information about this and trying to figure this out on “the internet” seemed impossible.

Thank you, now i know. Mods can mark it as resolved. Hopefully this will help future user until there is better user feedback in software

Actually it is, if theres no user feedback, i checked in the scribble option, nothing mentions that your keyboard gesture features will be disabled. In fact the only thing it says (in my language) “handwritting in text areas will be converted to digitized text” it says nothing about gesture features being altered in the keyboard.

So even if its not a problem (cus u can work around it) it’s a user feedback problem since a user like me who probably skipped that little note about scribble and keyboard interaction would be dead in the water if it werent for you guys replying to my problem. I was almost losing my mind. (I dont ever remember turning on scribble tbf)

Its solved for me (thnks)
