Apple TV 4K 3rd generation eARC sound issues, no problems with Apple TV 4K 2nd generation

I have the Apple TV 4K 3rd generation with ethernet and 128 GB. I got a new tv and sound bar, LG 65OLED3CAUA and Sonos Arc. All of my devices work fine except for the Apple TV 3rd generation. Initially the Apple TV alone with the Sonos Arc works without problem but as soon as I add another device and switch HDMI input and then switch back to the Apple TV only content with Dolby Atmos plays but Dolby 5.1 and HD content have no sound. It doesn't matter what app or content. I also have an Apple TV 4K 2nd generation, 64 GB with ethernet and no problems. To get Dolby Atmos with Sonos Arc I must have eARC enabled on the LG TV and I can't turn off CEC because it immediately switches on again.

Here is a link to the Sonos community with all of the things I have tried:

For now I have switched the Apple TV 2nd gen to my new LG TV and Sonos Arc. It is disappointing that I can't use the Apple TV 4K 3rd generation. I'm hoping someone has figured this out.

Thanks.

It broke with TVOS 17.0. Previous to 17.0, the Apple TV 3rd gen could distinguish between Dolby, 2 channel and 5.1 channel audio via the 'Auto' setting. Now - just as you said, if you want to listen to Atmos or Dolby 2 channel audio - use Auto. If 5.1 (the majority of TV programming), you have to force the audio to 'Change Format - 5.1 audio' in the audio settings. It will not work otherwise. Yep - I brought this up to Apple in September. I have heard no acknowledgement of it as an issue. It showed up in early TVOS 17.0 betas prior to it being released.

The issue of this topic is not “hearing” ATMOS, ATMOS works fine. The problem is when audio is set to AUTO,ATMOS some ATV apps play NO AUDIO if the app or the streamed video is NOT ATMOS so AUTO/ATMOS has to be set off (or whatever the setting is called) and then turned back on

eARC allows you to turn ALL DEVICES on/off with one button. I have 4 devices and with eARC off makes for more button pushes. It’s not just the TV and ATV.

Turning off eARC is just a bandaid on a bug that needs to be fixed. If I only had a TV and ATV to control maybe I could live with the annoying ATV remote.

Sine this bug didn’t exist in my GEN 2 ATV 4K but does on the GEN 3 4K it is an obvious bug and needs to be fixed.

This is also another downside to turning eARC off ON YOUR TV. It’s not just controlling the volume.

Most TVs compress audio signals in advance before going through HDMI cables. The eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel) enables you to transmit the original full-resolution audio signal through an HDMI cable and reproduce the best sound without compromise.

I had the Bose engineers and The LG service engineer both visit and check their respective products for an issue.

confusing for both.

Also with some setting, shutting off eARC made all work back again.

But recently I power cycled my Bose soundbar. And now if I shut off eARC I don’t get sound from any source, (TV apps or PS5 too)

so I’m back to having eARC on all the time, and using TV apps and PS5.

Believe me, I have tried every single setting and software update (even the one you are talking about), and everything else that is possible, but 5.1 on Apple TV (128 ethernet) produces no sound, while D-Atmos and 5.1 and 2.1, everything works from TV Apps and the Playstation5

So now it's only the Apple TV that I have kept disconnected from the TV and stopped boiling my blood over it.

It's just confusing, how all of these products using the "exact technology" that should enable them to work with each other seamlessly, is the one causing the problem.

LG engineer had offered a motherboard change on the OLED, under warranty.

I'm skeptical though.

I highly suggest connect your Apple TV to the Soundbar not to the TV. I have LG B3 77” and Vizio SB45 5.1.4 and Apple TV.

Audio output is Auto not the pass through. eArc support is on.

If you want to connect your Apple TV directly to the TV, you should turn off eArc support. This is the way I’m hearing the all kind of sounds and volume/power control from Apple TV remote.

Sorry, maybe I'm missing something with this $99 rigmarole and switching this or that you are going through.

FWIW, it happens on my cheap bedroom 40" Vizio (ATV 2nd gen) with internal speaker as well as my LG G2 with Sonos Arc (ATV 3rd gen).

SIMPLY turning off eArc in your TV settings ONLY (it is under ADVANCED SOUND SETTINGS on my G2 IIRC), and leaving default "auto" settings on on BOTH the LG & the Vizio in my case resolves it 100%. With that said I hear (and see) zero difference in the sound from my Sonos ARC with G2 eArc on or off IN TV SETTINGS or from the plain old internal TV speakers in the bedroom Vizio.

If you want to switch the LG setting on & off depending on what you are watching because (maybe to you) it sounds better, that's fine but what you are doing with all your hardware and splitting HDMI **AND** the toggling the settings ANYWAY seems very over reactive. :D

It is very possible I am missing something here but that's what's working for me. It's also possible my 76 year old ears can't tell the difference with the LG eArc setting off or on but the difference can't be very much. Until (or if) they fix this "bug" just leaving both TV's eArc setting off is painless. :D

Hey all, I found this thread earlier after having the same issue. I have found a fix and wanted to share with everyone. If you go into your TV (not Apple TV, your actual TV) settings, under sound, there should be an audio output setting and it’ll be on auto. Change it to “pass through” and it’ll work.

my set up is an LG C3 and LG C Series soundbar, with an Apple TV 4K on TVOS 16.5. Yes it’s not 17.2 like most everyone else but I still had the same issue on 16.5. I just got my Apple TV 4K earlier today, if it breaks with the update to 17.2 I’ll report back.

If you don’t hear anything back from me then I haven’t had any further issues.

Hope this helps! Happy New Year!

Tried both PCM (and pass-through as you suggested) and while both work it disables Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision sound in all programming that is encoded with those features. Normally, both of those items show up on the screen when the programming begins and now it’s no longer there and it sounds like crap. Using LG G2, Sonos Arc soundbar and newest Apple TV box. Problems began with 17.0. If by chance your soundbar does not support those features, then you wouldn’t notice it not working. The only thing that works for me is turning off EARC on the LG menu right above your advance sound settings you mentioned.
